  • Cyclical Changes in Emotional Information Processing in Sleep and Dreams

Sally K Severino, Wilma Bucci et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1989

Our scientific tools have rapidly advanced in recent decades. Urine tests and hormone assays allow us to know exactly where a woman is in her menstrual cycle and to document precisely her hormonal rhythms. Sleep-laboratory techniques allow us to know exactly when someone is dreaming so that we can obtain that communication that Freud prized so highly. Furthermore, we now have quantifiable means to measure accessibility to nonverbal mental represe…

  • Shame and the Development of Autonomy

Sally K Severino, Edith R McNutt et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1987

The authors hypothesize that the development of a capacity to experience the affect of shame, like the development of a capacity for anxiety and depression, is crucial for growth towards autonomy. They delineate the sources of shame, discuss gender-related differences in the experience of and management of shame, and describe the impact of a capacity, or lack of capacity, for shame on the development of autonomy in both men and women. They illust…

  • The “Dumb Spot”

Anne E Bernstein, Sally K Severino•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1986

A special kind of countertransference which we call the "dumb spot," has been observed and described. We have delineated "dumb spots" which are the result of unlearned theory, the result of learned but not accepted theory, and the result of learned, accepted but not used theory. Those "dumb spots" resulting from unlearned theory, especially in those areas where psychoanalysis is widening its scope of diagnostic categories, age range, and socioeco…

  • Use of a Holocaust Fantasy for the Consolidation of Identity

    Sally K Severino•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•1986

The early phases of an analysis are presented to describe a Jewish woman who, in her adolescence, chose a Holocaust fantasy as a means of consolidating her sense of identity. Her fantasy did what any fantasy or symptom does: it served as a compromise formation allowing expression of unacceptable drives while at the same time displacing, disguising, and defending against those drives. This fantasy was unique, however, because the Holocaust was a r…
