Discerning networks: Distortions of human movement in Urabá, Colombia
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the Colombian region of Urabá, that borders Panama, has gained notoriety for the transit of people moving from Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean to North America. Using an ethnographic approach, this article examines how the accounts of local bureaucrats and other actors in the region frame these movements within the influence of 'redes,' that is, networks, a vague reference to the hold illegal armed actors …
Tropes of Social Becoming Along a History of Circulation Within West Africa and From There to Latin America
Since the turn of the 21st century, the circulation of people from West Africa in and out of the African continent has intensified, turning Latin America into an emergent destination and transit zone. Drawing both from scholarly works and fiction, this article reflects on tropes of social becoming within a history of West African human movement that precedes present day circulation. By tropes of social becoming, I mean narratives around people re…
"Shattering the Myth of the "Jungle that Kills: Analysis of the Role of Intermediaries in Crossing the Darién Region (Colombia-Panama Border)
A "green hell"; a "jungle that kills": the semantics of political and media discourse hold the Darién jungle responsible and criminalise it as a central actor in migration. However, while the environment is certainly hostile, it cannot bear responsibility for the deaths of thousands of migrants who pass through it every day to reach the United States. This article examines the mythologised space of the Darién region beyond the topography and repr…
Since the beginning of the 21st century, Ecuador has been a point of transit but also of residence for migrants from around the world. While the attraction of this country resides in the flexible regulations of migration which stem from its policy of universal citizenship, the economic conditions there do not encourage migrants to stay. The starting point of this article is a previous study of the concept of errance which emerged from listening t…
Errance and Elsewheres among Africans Waiting to Restart Their Journeys in Dakar, Senegal
This article analyzes the experience of Africans stranded in Dakar, Senegal, halfway through their intended journeys out of the continent. A number of forces such as regimes of border control and visa policies, a culturally rooted sense of adventure, historically established networks, and individual genius shape their itineraries. These forces lead them to Dakar, prevent the continuation of their journeys, and bend their routes and destinations t…
