  • Vignerons and the Vines

    Open Access•Mark Anthony Arceño•ARTICLE•Social Anthropology•2022•References: 12

English Abstract: Amid ongoing social and ecological transformations, vignerons (winegrowers) and the vines in their care are responding to the impacts of climatic and other forms of change. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in the eastern French winegrowing region of Alsace, I turn to the sensorium as the site where changing landscapes are forcing people to rethink the meaning of terroir, a key term in which winegrowing is articulated as a pract…

  • Training wicked scientists for a world of wicked problems

Open Access•N C Kawa, Mark Anthony Arceño et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2021

Humanity faces a number of wicked problems, from global climate change and the coronavirus pandemic to systemic racism and widening economic inequality. Since such complex and dynamic problems are plagued by disagreement among stakeholders over their nature and cause, they are notoriously difficult to solve. This commentary argues that if humanity truly aspires to address the grand challenges of today and tomorrow, then graduate education must be…

  • It’s women’s obligation

Mayara Sanay Da Silva Oliveira, Priscila De Morais Sato et al.•ARTICLE•Food Culture & Society•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 5

This article examines constitutive elements of contemporary domestic cooking practices among women who live in the urban area of Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Brazil. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 16 self-identified women and mothers, who cook at home at least once a day. Here, we offer an in-depth analysis of our qualitative data, having coded our interviews with attention to the elements of cooking practices (i.e., understandings, proce…

  • On Winegrowers and More-than-Human Workers in Ohioan and Alsatian Vineyards

    Open Access•Mark Anthony Arceño•ARTICLE•Culture Agriculture Food and…•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 35

Understandings of the terroir concept range from recognizing "the environment" as being largely responsible for affecting the taste of a place-based product like wine to considering the intervening role of social actors in its production. This article takes the perspective that non-human life forms, as well as non-living entities, are more than just ecologically embedded observers. They also have active roles in the terroir system itself. Here, I…

  • Walking, Talking, and Tasting with Winegrowers in Central Ohio and Eastern France

    Mark Anthony Arceño•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•2020

Drawing on eighteen months of fieldwork throughout central Ohio, USA, and Alsace, eastern France, I reflect on the importance of relying on more than just my eyes when collecting data. I illustrate examples of how I have felt, heard, smelled, tasted, and now talk about the changes that winegrowers identify in their vineyards, wine cellars, and tasting rooms. I affirm that it is necessary to look beyond what we observe, as we interpret the collect…

  • Variability and Change

    Open Access•Mark Anthony Arceño•ARTICLE•Anthropology of food•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 36

This article examines how central Ohio winegrowers are able to manufacture “the taste of place” in the midst of a dominant global discourse that maintains a rhetoric of anthropogenic climate change. Importantly, this work positions climate as not necessarily changing but rather as seemingly always being in a state of change. While relatively few winegrowers in central Ohio have been growing grapes and making wine for a few decades, many more are …

  • Contesting Terroir

  • Comparison of government recommendations for healthy eating habits in visual representations of food-based dietary guidelines in Latin America

Open Access•Mayara Sanay Da Silva Oliveira, Mark Anthony Arceño et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 21

Visual representations of food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) express diverse dietary and sociocultural norms, especially as they relate to healthy eating habits. This article investigates government recommendations for healthy eating habits expressed in the visual representation of Latin American FBDGs. Drawing on 15 images published between 1991 and 2017, we conducted an anthropological visual analysis guided by the methodology proposed by Jam…
