An Overlooked Gem of Pictish Art
A little-known fragment of cross-slab from St Ringan’s Cairn in the Grampian Mountains of Aberdeenshire (Scotland) is identified as a significant example of Pictish sculptural art of the late 8th or early 9th centuries. It was created by a skilled stone-carver with an exceptional sense of design, probably based in a monastery in southern Aberdeenshire or Angus, and its location marked an important route through the mountains between northern and …
A Pictish ‘serpent’ incised slab from Jarlshof, Shetland
The identification and dating of a supposed Norse grave slab of 10th-/11th-century date from Jarlshof, Shetland, consisting of two decorated fragments picked up on the beach beside this multi-period settlement site in the 1930s, are rejected by the authors of this paper in favour of a Pictish attribution, a late 6th- or early 7th-century date, and a probable architectural function. On the basis of a detailed examination of the two fragments of th…
Another Pictish cross-of-arcs
A fragment of carved stone known as ‘Lerwick’ (NMS X.IB.19) is argued to have come, most probably, from the Pictish levels at Jarlshof, Dunrossness, Shetland, sometime before June 1861. The stone bears part of a Pictish crescent symbol on one side and part of a cross-of-arcs embellished with decorated lentoid forms on the other. The symbol-bearing cross-slab from which the fragment comes probably dates to the 7th century and may have stood in or …
Pictish symbol stones and early cross-slabs from Orkney
Orkney shared in the flowering of interest in stone carving that took place throughout Scotland from the 7th century ad onwards. The corpus illustrated here includes seven accomplished Pictish symbol-bearing stones, four small stones incised with rough versions of symbols, at least one relief-ornamented Pictish cross-slab, thirteen cross-slabs (including recumbent slabs), two portable cross-slabs and two pieces of church furniture in the form of …
From Colonsay to Whithorn
William B M Galloway (1832-97) is one of the less well-known Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland in the second half of the 19th century whose achievements deserve recognition. He was an architect with a distinct archaeological bent, and he was particularly interested in early ecclesiastical buildings and sculpture. He appears to have worked freelance after an initial training in Patrick Wilson's architectural practice, and he is bes…
Cemeteries of platform cairns and long cists around Sinclair's Bay, Caithness
The cemetery at Ackergill in Caithness has become the type site for Pictish platform cairns. A re-appraisal based on Society of Antiquaries of Scotland manuscripts, together with published sources, shows that, rather than comprising only the eight cairns and two long cists excavated by Edwards in the 1920s, the cemetery was more extensive. Close to Edward's site, Barry had already excavated two other circular cairns, three rectangular cairns and …

A fragment of a Pictish symbol-bearing slab with carving in relief from Mail, Cunningsburgh, Shetland
A fragment of carved stone found in March 2008 is considered likely to be part of a Pictish cross-slab of eighth- to tenth-century date. It bears a double disc and Z-rod within a frame and part of an interlace design, carved in incision and low relief. This is the fifth symbol-bearing monument known from Shetland and the only one to bear this particular symbol. Each disc is infilled with a cross of arcs, but it is uncertain whether this is purely…
The Dupplin Cross
Widespread public concern about the weathering of the Dupplin Cross resulted in its removal from its site in the parklands of Dupplin Castle to a sheltered environment at St Serf’s Church, Dunning. An archaeological investigation of the immediate environment of the cross was carried out as part of this operation. This paper describes the cross and its context in the royal and ecclesiastical milieu of the ninth century. Cartographic evidence shows…

Painted pebbles in early Scotland
Pebbles with simple but carefully-painted designs are unique to Caithness and the Northern Isles between 3rd and 8th centuries AD. Their apparent connection with Pictish culture is supported by some sharing of motifs with the repertoire of the Pictish symbol stones. They may be charm stones like those known from medieval sources and folklore; the Life of St Columba also contains a reference to a healing stone
