A longitudinal study of school adjustment among children attending Reggio-inspired preschools
The goal of this study was to track the progress of Italian children at risk for school failure enrolled in preschools based on the Reggio-Emilia approach. Risk factors considered included family socioeconomic status (SES), child receptive language, and child gender. Participants were 211 children ( M age = 60.8 months, 116 girls) in Reggio-inspired preschools in Genoa, Italy. The sample was followed over six time points starting from the last ye…
Hopelessness and shame in relation to suicide attempts by Cuban adolescents
Youth suicide rates in Cuba are very high compared with most other countries, despite considerable improvement in recent years. The purpose of our study was to determine whether hopelessness and shame distinguish adolescent suicide attempters from non-attempters, over and above the effects of depression and suicidal ideation. Participants were 844 Cuban adolescents from the province of Holguin in Eastern Cuba. The attempter groups included 38 par…

Effectiveness of a Mobile App Intervention to Prevent Dating Violence in Residential Child Care
This study focuses on the effectiveness of an app-based, monitored intervention using the Liad@s app in a residential youth-care setting. The aim of this intervention is to reduce maladaptive beliefs and attitudes linked to dating violence: distortions or myths about romantic love and hostile and benevolent dimensions of sexism. A quasi-experimental pre-post study with a control group was carried out. Participants were 71 adolescents from 9 group…
Children’s Awareness of Peer Rejection and Teacher Reports of Aggressive Behavior
Lack of awareness of one’s negative social reputation is linked to aggressive behavior among older school-age children. The present study extends this research to the first year of elementary school. The first goal was to compare generalized and dyadic perspectives in studying discrepancies between children’s actual and perceived rejection. The second goal was to determine whether discrepancies between actual and perceived rejection are related t…
School Adjustment and Friendship Quality of First- and Second-Generation Adolescent Immigrants to Spain as a Function of Acculturation
The purpose of this study was to determine the links between school adjustment, friendship, and identification with both the cultures of origin and with the host culture. Our overriding hypothesis was that integration in Berry’s terms, that is, simultaneous identification with both the culture of origin and the majority Spanish/Catalan culture, would predict better school adjustment. We also expected the same integrated acculturative stance to be…

Parental Bonds in Children at High and Low Familial Risk for Panic Disorder
Perceived Parental and Peer Support in Relation to Canadian, Cuban, and Spanish Adolescents' Valuing of Academics and Intrinsic Academic Motivation
The aim of this study was to explore possible parent and peer influences on adolescents' valuing of academics and intrinsic academic motivation in cultures varying in traditional emphasis on the family unit (Cuba, Canada, and Spain). Perceived parent and peer support, parents' expectations, and valuing of academics significantly predicted adolescents' valuing of education and motivation. Spanish adolescents were less motivated than members of the…
Social support as a predictor of school bonding and academic motivation following the transition to Italian middle school
After five years in elementary schools with small classes and stimulation of basic thinking skills, Italian children move to very traditional scuola media. Data obtained from 434 Italian pupils revealed that school bonding and academic motivation declined sharply after this transition. Social support by parents, but not friends, was a predictor of school bonding and academic motivation. There was little consistent evidence of compensatory process…
Close Friendship as Understood by Socially Withdrawn, Anxious Early Adolescents
Closeness and Competition in the Inter-Ethnic and Co-Ethnic Friendships of Early Adolescents in Toronto and Montreal
The purpose of this study is to compare the inter-ethnic and co-ethnic friend-ships of 390 junior high school students in multi-ethnic neighborhoods of Montreal and Toronto. Friendship dyads were identified on the basis of reciprocal nomination as close friends. The quality of the friendships was measured by questionnaires completed by both members of each friendship dyad. Co-ethnic friendships were characterized by greater closeness and more con…
Peer Relationships in Cultural Context
This book responds to the absence of a comprehensive consideration of the implications of culture for children's peer relationships. Although research in this field has burgeoned in recent years, cultural issues have often been overlooked. The chapters tap such issues as the impact of social circumstances and cultural values on peer relationships, culturally prescribed socialization patterns and processes, emotional experience and regulation in p…
Assessing Friendship Motivation During Preadolescence and Early Adolescence
The authors describe the development and initial psychometric properties of the Friendship Motivation Scale for Children, a new scale designed to assess four dimensions of self-determination (i.e., intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and amotivation) in preadolescents and early adolescents’ desire for friendships. The results—obtained with a sample of 490 fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-grade boys and girls— confirmed th…
Explaining cross-national differences in peer-directed aggression
A quantitative review was conducted of cross-national studies on peer-directed aggression to determine whether cross-national differences in aggression could be predicted from differences in national values. Cross-national differences on dimensions of cultural-level values derived from the works of Hofstede [1980, 1983], Bond [Chinese Culture Connection, 1987], and Schwartz [1994] were used to predict effect sizes of cross-national differences in…

The Effectiveness of Whole-School Antibullying Programs
Bullying is a serious problem in schools, and school authorities need effective solutions to resolve this problem. There is growing interest in the whole-school approach to bullying. Whole-school programs have multiple components that operate simultaneously at different levels in the school community. This article synthesizes the existing evaluation research on whole-school programs to determine the overall effectiveness of this approach. The maj…
Friendship Expectations of Early Adolescents in Cuba and Canada
Concepts of friendshipmay reflect the collectivism or individualismof societies or differences in their social structures. We asked Canadian ( N = 300) and Cuban ( N = 294) adolescents to write essays about the features that distinguish their best friends. Acceptance and loyalty were frequent features in the essays from both countries. Despite many cross-national similarities, there were significant differences in the frequency of responses refer…
Child–parent attachment and children's peer relations
The central premise of attachment theory is that the security of the early child-parent bond is reflected in the child's interpersonal relationships across the life span. This meta-analysis was based on 63 studies that reported correlations between child-parent attachment and children's peer relations. The overall effect size (ES) for child-mother attachment was in the small-to-moderate range and was quite homogeneous. ESs were similar in studies…
A Behaviour‐Based Peer‐Nomination Measure of Social Withdrawal in Children
Research on social withdrawal has been impeded by problems in the definition of the construct and in its measurement. The purpose of this study was to develop a behaviourally‐based peer‐nomination measure useful in measuring two types of withdrawal: Inhibited/Wary and Self‐Conscious/Anxious. In Study 1, we report the development of the measure. We examined whether this two‐factor structure would be supported by data obtained from multiple informa…

A longitudinal exploration of the continuity of children's social participation and social withdrawal across socioeconomic status levels and social settings
The major purpose of this study was to determine the stability across time and social setting of children's social participation and social withdrawal. We followed a sample of Canadian children, aged five years at the beginning of the study, for two years. Children from lower-SES homes were less involved than those from the higher-SES in group play after school and during outdoor recess. Across the full sample, social withdrawal was not very stab…

Cross-cultural comparison as doorkeeper in research on the social and emotional adjustment of children and adolescents
Cross-cultural comparison serves a crucial function as a final test of paradigms that emerge in intracultural studies of child and adolescent adjustment and maladjustment. Beliefs about child and adolescent adjustment are inextricably linked to cultural values regarding the place of the individual in society. Socialization practices and coping behaviors differ in adaptive significance according to the economic structure of a society and its value…

Adolescent-Parent Attachment and Adolescents' Relations with their Peers
We hypothesized that adolescents who reported secure attachments with their parents would display higher levels of interpersonal relational competence. Sixty-three 10th-grade pupils completed the Inventory of Parent Attachment and the Interpersonal Competence Questionnaire. Despite the fact that attachment is generally conceptualized as a unidimensional construct, we found little concordance between positive aspects of attachment (i.e., trust and…
A Longitudinal Exploration of the Cross-Contextual Stability of Social Withdrawal in Early Adolescence
The purpose for the present study was to determine the stability across time and social setting of the social withdrawal of early adolescents. Nominations by school peers for social withdrawal were stable across a 3-year period. Daily activity logs completed by parents indicated considerable stability for participation in large-group activities with peers in the community, but not for activities involving smaller groups of peers. Participants nom…

Coaching Socially Rejected Early Adolescents Regarding Behaviors Used by Peers to Infer Liking
In an experimental manipulation, 24 socially rejected children, two from each of 12 different Grade 5 classes, were coached on the importance of displaying behaviors known to be used by peers in making inferences of liking. These children were then encouraged to communicate these behaviors toward selected friendship targets within their own classroom groups. Significant treatment-related improvements were found in these friendships, and targets r…
A comparison of skill-building and desensitization strategies for intervention with aggressive children
Social skills training and desensitization interventions were conducted with 41 institutionalized aggressive children aged 7–13. Subjects were randomly assigned after blocking by aggression and cooperative play to either of the treatments. Dependent measures were direct observations of playground play and teacher ratings. Subjects in the social skills program mastered the basic cognitive skills presented to them. Observational data indicated that…
Development of a Peer-Report Measure of Social Transactions Used by Early Adolescents to Infer Liking
The purpose of this study was to develop a peer-report measure of social transactions used to infer liking by peers. Sixty-five early adolescents were interviewed concerning the behavioral basis of their impressions of who liked or disliked them in their class. Twenty-two behavioral cues for liking between children were then tentatively identified. To confirm the communicative potential of these behaviors, another sample of 260 Grade 5 students r…
