Eduardo Noguera, 1896-1977
With the death of Eduardo Noguera, Mexican archaeology has lost one of its last great personalities, a man devoted to the knowledge of the past of his country for more than half a century, a pioneer and an authority in his field, a student as well as a scholar
The Destruction of Structure 5D-33-1st at Tikal
The validity of the reasons adduced by a group of excavators for the willful destruction of a temple pyramid at Tikal is questioned and a greater sense of responsibility among archaeologists is urged
The Inscription of the Temple of the Cross at Palenque
A fresh examination of the chronological data of the inscription serves as a framework for analysis of the undeciphered or text glyphs. The undeciphered glyphs have been grouped into categories. The main category, which consists of glyphs related to the up-ended frog glyph, the flat hand, and Thompson's Jog glyph, is interpreted as referring to local history. Another category is composed of glyphs or clauses that are common at other Maya sites an…

The High Altar of Huejotzingo
Traveling on the Pan-American Highway from Mexico City to Puebla, the tourist may feel invited to stop at the small and somnolent town of Huejotzingo. After having succeeded in shaking off the vendors of gaudy sarapes and having tasted the local cider, he may walk around the typical plaza and then he will not fail to be attracted by the old fortress-like church belonging to the sixteenthcentury monastery. In the atrium a pleasant shade of old gia…

Salvador De Ocampo, A Mexican Sculptor
The Historian of Art in colonial Mexico can find his way fairly well in the field of painting, since the signatures of painters appear on the pictures; in the field of architecture a growing body of published documents makes it possible to become familiar with the personalities of the architects. In regard to sculpture, however, there is practically no information available. We know hardly the names of any of the men who carved the church fronts …

Archaeological Excavations in Chiapas
When the Spaniards conquered the central portion of the Mexican state of Chiapas in 1524 they found it occupied by the so called Chiapanecs, a brave tribe which the Aztecs never permanently subdued, but who on the contrary, succeeded in seriously disturbing commerce between the Aztec metropolis and their most southern provinces. Both the origin and the history of the Chiapanecs are still unknown. There is no codex of the time prior to Cortés, nor …

A Critique of Dates at Palenque
During three field seasons spent at Palenque under the auspices of the Institute Nacional de Antropología e Historia of Mexico in 1940, 1941, and 1942, I had an opportunity to compare some inscriptions at that great Maya city with interpretations of them published by various students. This convinced me that these interpretations are not always in harmony with the real and actual reading of the inscriptions
