Neither typist nor genius
In the 1920s screenwriting duo Anita Loos and John Emerson wrote two how-to guides that offered advice for launching a Hollywood career, How to Write Photoplays (1921) and Breaking into the Movies (1922). Rather than emphasizing genius, the guides focus on Hollywood as an egalitarian workplace where writers become professionals through training and experience. This article argues that the guides thus functioned to distinguish Loos as a profession…
Techniques of Justice
This essay responds to recent calls for a closer examination of visualizations of race in multi-ethnic literature by revisiting the work of W. E. B. Du Bois in this area: particularly, the infographics he created for the 1900 Paris Exposition and the covers he commissioned for The Crisis during his editorship of that journal. Utilizing an approach derived from Foucault’s theories of panopticism, we consider how Du Bois engaged contemporary visual…
Voices from Beyond the Grave
This article argues that Virtual 2Pac, created in 2012 by Digital Domain Media Group in collaboration with Dr. Dre for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, represents an important twenty-first-century challenge to the relationships between performance and performer, film and archive, and death and the image. This essay traces the ghostliness of entertainers speaking from beyond the grave and the new interpretive problems that come to the…

I argue that these filmmakers exploit what I term the audience's cruel knowledge about actresses in order to position the films in relation to the other art forms associated with their actresses…
