The Complexity of Assessing Ministry-Specific Satisfaction and Stress
Christian ministry work can be gratifying, but it also carries a risk of burnout. Despite research documenting clergy stress and wellness, few questionnaires measure ministry life aspects that contribute to clergy burnout or wellness. To fill this gap, we developed the positive aspects (PAI) and negative aspects (NAI) inventories. These questionnaires measure the intensity and frequency of positive and negative aspects of ministry life. The prese…
Outcomes of a pilot music education initiative to enhance social justice engagement among university students
Civic engagement and social justice have received heightened attention in music education in the decade since Jorgensen posed the question ‘Why should music educators not be interested in justice?’ To this end, a social-justice focused initiative was piloted with choral ensembles at two public universities in the Midwestern US using human trafficking as the focal issue. Measuring Ministry-Specific Stress and Satisfaction

Arabs, Latins and Persians bearing gifts
Although translation of foreign literature was rare in Byzantium, in c. 1300 three Greek translations of treatises on using the astrolabe appeared, two from Latin and one from Persian or Arabic; all three are assessed in terms of Greek style and significance for Byzantine culture. The Islamic treatise translated by Shams al-Din al-Bukhari includes a translator’s preface, edited in full and translated into English here for the first time. In the p…
The Anonymous Commentary On Nicomachean Ethics VII
The anonymous commentator on Nicomachean Ethics (NE) VII has gained a tripartite reputation for incompetence among the scholars of the past two centuries who have examined his work. Their verdict is unanimous: he is incompetent in managing the morphology and vocabulary of Greek, incompetent in mustering adequate Greek style to express himself, and incompetent in understanding and explicating philosophical ideas. This chapter illustrates two examp…
Les traités orthographiques grecs antiques et byzantins . Jean Schneider
The Homilies of the Emperor Leo VI. Theodora Antonopoulou
Orationes hagiographicae
Les Femmes et le monachisme byzantin / Women and Byzantine Monasticism
Michael Psellos on the rhetoric of hagiography and the Life of St Auxentius
Hagiography and rhetoric appear incompatible according to modern conceptions of how each functioned in Byzantine society. Rhetoric, a vehicle of upward mobility, depended upon an elaborate theoretical literature and promised to skilled practitioners enviable professional reputations in remunerative public pursuits among influential people. Hagiography, in contrast, appealed to a socially diverse Christian audience and recorded the deeds of those …
