Investigating the Applicability of the Safer‐YCL Care Bundle for Transitions From CAMHS Crisis and Liaison Services
BACKGROUND: Crisis and Liaison teams in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) offer intensive, short-term support to young people experiencing mental health crisis in the community (Crisis) or admitted to acute hospitals (Liaison). There is no evidence-based model for how these teams operate. The SAFER care bundle, designed to improve discharges from acute hospitals, has been adapted for use in mental health inpatient discharges for…
Health Needs and Their Relationship with Life Expectancy in People with and without Intellectual Disabilities in England
Health needs are common in people living with intellectual disabilities, but we do not know how they contribute to life expectancy. We used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) linked with hospital/mortality data in England (2017-2019) to explore life expectancy among people with or without intellectual disabilities, indicated by the presence or absence, respectively, of: epilepsy; incontinence; severe visual loss; severe visual impairm…
Mortality disparities and deprivation among people with intellectual disabilities in England
BACKGROUND: The effect of policy initiatives and deprivation on mortality disparities in people with intellectual disabilities is not clear. METHODS: An electronic health record observational study of linked primary care data in England from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink and the Office for National Statistics deaths data from 2000 to 2019 was undertaken. All-cause and cause-specific mortality for people with intellectual disabilities we…
An experimental study exploring the impact of vignette gender on the quality of university students’ mental health first aid for peers with symptoms of depression
Most students lack the necessary MHFA skills to support friends suffering from symptoms of depression, or to help them get appropriate support and prevent risk of harm. Students on courses which do not include mental health related content are particularly ill-equipped to support male students, with male students receiving the poorest quality MHFA from fellow male students on these courses. MHFA training has the potential to improve outcomes for …
Psychological morbidity and health-related quality of life after injury
Hospitalised injuries result in substantial reductions in HRQoL up to 12 months later. Depression and anxiety early in the recovery period are independently associated with lower HRQoL. Identifying and managing these problems, ensuring adequate pain control and facilitating social functioning are key elements in improving HRQoL post-injury
Planning for incapacity by people with bipolar disorder under the Mental Capacity Act 2005
The Mental Capacity Act 2005 provides a variety of legal mechanisms for people to plan for periods of incapacity for decisions relating to personal care, medical treatment, and financial matters. Little research has however been done to determine the degree to which these are actually implemented, and the approach to such advance planning by service users and professionals. This paper looks at the use of advance planning by people with bipolar di…
An analysis of the R esearch T eam– S ervice U ser relationship from the S ervice U ser perspective
BACKGROUND: This article debates interview data from service users who engaged with the work of a Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC). The evidence base, to date, concerning the nature of CLAHRC work at the frontline (i.e. What is it actually like to do CLAHRC work?) is meagre; thus, this article represents an original contribution to that literature. Further, this article analyses service users' participatio…

An architectural analysis of the Hot Bath and Cross Bath, Bath, 1997–2003
These baths represent two very significant architectural pieces within a city famed for innovation in that field. The Hot Bath was designed by the internationally renowned John Wood the Younger, the Cross Bath by Thomas Baldwin, ‘principal creator of Bath’. As public buildings focused on bathing, their design needed to reflect changing social attitudes as well as the latest architectural fashion. An opportunity to study the buildings between 1997…

The Bell Tower of St Mary's Church, Pembridge, Herefordshire
Pembridge in Herefordshire is home to one of the earliest surviving timber bell towers in the country. Survey work was undertaken on the structure in 1997, funded by a grant from English Heritage, and the detailed measured survey, combined with the dendrochronology undertaken on the timbers, has established that the original tower dates from between 1207 and 1223 and that part of a contemporary roof may survive. The work also showed that the ambu…

Shrewsbury Market Place and Hall
Shrewsbury's late sixteenth-century Old Market Hall—recently restored and returned to public use—is among the most prominent buildings in the town centre and, or so it would seem, a reminder of the town's pre-eminence as a marketing centre in the central Marches in the early modern period. Combining documentary evidence, archaeology, and the evidence of the building itself, this inter-disciplinary study sets out to examine the real reasons for th…

Adult education in Australia
In this paper we analyse changes in the provision of adult education in Australia in the 20 years to 2000. We do so by identifying the ways in which adult education has responded to global trends and issues relating to demography, the ‘knowledge economy’, the changing workplace, and the changing role of the state from a ‘provider’ to a ‘purchaser’ of education. Perhaps the key change in adult education since 1980 is that it has been reconfigured …
