    Open Access•Nicholas O Warner, Ronald E Riggio•ARTICLE•Leadership•2012•References: 3

This study examines Italian-American immigrant leaders through the stereotyped portrayal of Italian-American leaders in film. The most influential film for representing Italian-American leadership is Francis Ford Coppola’s film The Godfather. We first review the emergence of Italian immigrant leadership in the United States and then briefly summarize typical patterns in the cinematic portrayal of Italian-Americans, followed by an in-depth examina…

All post-Tolstoy writers, whether Russian or foreign, have had to contend with his image. He and his books stand inescapably there: massive, majestic, seemingly impregnable. Two incompatible Tolstoy's confront each succeeding generation that attempts to understand his oeuvre: on one hand the husband, father, aristocratic landowner and world-famous novelist; on the other the 'humble' prophet of Christian anarchism, anti-cultural 'simplification', …

Although generally conceded to be one of the most important works in all literature, War and Peace has proved to be one of the most critically troublesome as well.' This critical discomfiture is particularly apparent in the numerous attempts to define just what the verbal artifact called War and Peace is, to locate its generic identity. As critics have long recognized, War and Peace shares affinities with both the traditional realistic novel and …

  • The Russian Novel from Pushkin to Pasternak

    Nicholas O Warner, John Garrard•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1985•Cited by: 1

The Russian novel, more than any other genre, has contributed to the fame that Russian literature enjoys abroad. Even though Russian poetry stands at the same level as the novel, it has fared less well, undoubtedly because of the difficulty of adequate translation. The short story, except for Chekhov, Babel, and a few others, has never reached the heights of the novel. It is no coincidence that some of the greatest among Russian writers—Gogol, Tu…
