Bibelkommentarer i undervisning
This joint article, comprising five contributions, results from a workshop focused on the use of Bible commentaries in teaching at Swedish universities today. While each contribution presents a distinct style and voice, we all agree on the importance of learning how to use commentaries in higher education and, equally, the need for their active application. We also all welcome the development of more commentaries in Swedish. The first two contrib…

The Cyrus Cylinder in Biblical Scholarship
This article outlines and evaluates the scholarly interaction with the Cyrus Cylinder. It argues that, due to significant differences in terms of content and focus, it is unlikely that the Cyrus Cylinder as a text has yielded any form of direct influence upon the biblical material. Whereas the Cyrus Cylinder emphasises how Cyrus restores the Babylonian deities to their rightful place in Babylon, the edicts in Ezra stress the return of the exiles …

Jonah in 20th Century Literature
The biblical book of Jonah has been the subject of multiple literary retellings, ranging from individual poems to whole novels and theatrical dramas. This article focuses on interaction with the book of Jonah in 20th-century world literature, where Jonah becomes our alter ego; he embodies our own struggles with God. I shall highlight three common tropes in the retellings: (1) Several retellings use the character of Jonah to express a person's fai…
The Oxford Handbook of Isaiah
The book of Isaiah is without doubt one of the most important books in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, as evidenced by its pride of place in both Jewish and Christian traditions as well as in art and music. Most people, scholars and laity alike, are familiar with the words of Isaiah accompanied by the magnificent tones of Handel’s ‘Messiah’. Isaiah is also one of the most complex books due to its variety and plurality, and it has accordingly been…

The Poetic Vision of Isaiah
This chapter is an attempt to meet Robert Carroll’s challenge to account for and imaginatively interpret the visionary quality of Isaiah’s poetry. It begins with a discussion of biblical poetry and eschews formalistic definitions, showing how parallelism, like other formal devices, is a technique for generating meaning. It then considers the visionary quality of the poetry, as a divine message, and the trajectory from the vision to the book. The …
For the Comfort of Zion
This monograph seeks to identity the target audience of Isaiah 40-55. In doing so, it challenges the widespread view that Isaiah 40-55, in whole or in part, aims at and also reflects the concerns of the exilic community in Babylon
To Read - Or Not to Read - Ezekiel as Christian Scripture
This article focuses on the difficulty today to read the book of Ezekiel canonically. In Ezekiel, God’s destruction of Jerusalem is vindicated by the people’s utter sinfulness. Many earlier Christian readings of Ezekiel have tended to focus on how, through Jesus, human sin is finally conquered. I contend that such a reading does injustice to the message of the book of Ezekiel as a whole, as it enables the readers to quickly dismiss the horror of …
Priestly rites and prophetic rage
Priestly Rites and Prophetic Rage
Although Judah's prophets and priests often stood united in their concerns for the cult, many prophetic texts from the 6th and the 5th century BC testify to a major disagreement between them as to how to worship God. Lena-Sofia Tiemeyer analyzes the critique of the priests as found in the prophetic texts from that period. In these texts, the prophets accused the priests of misdemeanours in both the cultic and the social realm. The author further …

Abraham – A Judahite Prerogative
This article discusses the references to Abraham in the literature of the sixth century BC (Ez 11,15; 33,23; Isa 41,8; 51,2; 63,16 and Neh 9). First, it addresses the inter-textual relation between the references to Abraham in Ezekiel and in Isaiah 40–55: while the earlier Ezekielian material rejects the Judahites' claim to land through the promise to Abraham, the later Isaianic material, addressing a Judahite audience, affirms it. Secondly, it e…

This fascinating monograph explores the jurisprudence, i.e. the legal philosophy, of the early rabbis. It discusses the rabbis' perception of the difference between perfect (divine) knowledge and p
Continuity and Discontinuity
This volume of collected essays focuses on the relationship between the different texts within Isaiah 40-66. It reinvestigates and challenges the traditional division between chapters 40-55 and 56-66 and explores new ways of reading the last 27 chapters of the book of Isaiah. Each article examines Isaiah 40-55 and/or Isaiah 56-66 and highlights continuity and discontinuity within this material. Some contributions belong to the tradition of histor…
