  • Sie besamt: Über das Geheimnis des Lebens in Claire Denis’ Science-Fiction-Film High Life (2018)

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Body Politics•2024

English Abstract: As I will show in the following, High Life can be read as a complex philosophical commentary on the entanglement of sexuality, gender, reproduction, and the historicity of life under the current conditions of science and technology. High Life exposes the gendered and racially differentiated violence of thanatopolitics inherent in biopolitics, and shows the ways in which the death drive can become a resistant moment that opposes …

  • Room for a Different Kind of Future

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Modern Language Notes•2024

This essay is a meditation on the relationship between thought, happiness and fatelessness in Sam Weber, Walter Benjamin, Gershom Scholem, and Jacques Lacan. The starting point is a discussion about a line in the poem “Greetings from the Angel” by Gershom Scholem, which introduces the famous IXth thesis of Benjamin’s “On the Concept of History.”

  • Technics: Media in the Digital Age

Anna Rogers, Iain Christie et al.•BOOK•Technics•2024•References: 28

The Key Debates series was launched in 2010 with the aim of revisiting "the central issues that continue to animate thinking about film and audiovisual media," which we have now done across ten volumes. All of these have followed a pattern of reexamining foundational texts and issues, while also investigating new lines of transmission and interpretation. Our book series' dual interest in foundations and novel lines of inquiry is demonstrated by the…

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Transit•2023

“Central Airport THF” is a documentary film about the temporary housing of refugees in the halls of the former Tempelhof Airport, located at the edge of Berlin’s Tempelhofer Feld. As if by accident, the director contrasts the arrested life in the adapted shelter to the mobility of life in the politically contested Tempelhof Park adjacent to it. Beginning with the specific locality of Central Airport Tempelhof, its architecture, history, and curre…

The Space of Appearance in Deep Underground:A Film Is Being Made and the Documentary Gesture Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky Zama Zama We see a group of young miners descending into an abandoned yet unsealed mineshaft. They look skinny rather than strong, their dark skin is gray from dust. The men carry small digital cameras. In the first shot one can still see the daylight shining through the entrance of the shaft. Then there are only the bundled light …

  • Queeres Kino / Queere Ästhetiken als Dokumentationen des Prekären

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky, Philipp Hanke•BOOK•Queeres Kino / queere Ästhetiken…•2021

  • Niobe and Korah, Different Orders of Time

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Critical Times•2019

Walter Benjamin's critique of violence assumes that violence is deeply intertwined with the division of time and space. Niobe serves as an example that allows Benjamin to give an account of the violent conditions of the order of time that is constituted under the rule of law. The example of Korah helps to illustrate the difference between divine violence and legal violence and to underscore the centrality of time's passage for the moral world. Un…

  • Herbs and Weeds

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•positions asia critique•2018

In his review of Chrut und Uchrut, an extremely successful and popular practical booklet of medicinal herbs, Benjamin tests a new concept of literary criticism. He links the reviewing of the popular guide with reflection on the media-technology-conditioned transformation of criticism. By doing so, he delivers at the same time an accurate physiognomy of Swiss society, whose self-image was more informed by its peasantry than by its working class. I…

  • Critique of state violence in Walter Benjamin and Hermann Cohen

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•PARADIGMI•2017

  • Nietzsche’s Practices of Illusion

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Critical Horizons•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This essay examines the complex topic of illusion and art in Nietzsche’s philosophy. It focuses on two topics in particular: Nietzsche’s practice of self-transformation; and the question of how to differentiate through the analysis of style those practices that are deluded from those that are transformative

  • Cutting off Mediation. Agamben as Master Thinker

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky, Catharine Diehl et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Agamben’s Homo Sacer turns centrally upon “bare life”. However, the following subjects are not thematized: natality, gender, sexuality, the relation of the sexes, the heterosexual character of the symbolic order and political culture, the interest of women in the reproduction of life. The entire question of sexual difference —like that of the difference between victim and perpetrator, between witnesses and those born afterwards— is banned from Ag…

  • Cutting off Mediation. Agamben as Master Thinker

    Open Access•Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Acta Poética•2015

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•New German Critique•2008

In his book The Time That Remains: A Commentary on the Letter to the Romans , Giorgio Agamben states that the famous hunchbacked dwarf from Walter Benjamin's first thesis on the philosophy of history was none other than Paul. Unlike Agamben, Benjamin was a reader of the Jewish philosopher Hermann Cohen, whose interpretation of human weakness represents not only an alternative but in many respects a counterposition to Paul. In my article I present…

    Astrid Deuber-Mankowsky•ARTICLE•Revue germanique internationale•2007
