  • Transfiguring Medievalism

Anna Klosowska•ARTICLE•The Journal of English and…•2022

If you have read Cary Howie's previous books—an intersection of medieval literature, medievalism, contemporary art and poetry, Queer Studies, and spirituality—you might agree with me that his personal, unmistakable voice becomes stronger in each book. This most recent book I would characterize as “practicing theology without a license,” and it may be just what you need in our present moment, weighted with uncertainty. The premise of each chapter …

  • Trans Historical

Greta Lafleur, Masha Raskolnikov et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Trans Historical•2021

This book explores the plurality of gender experiences that flourished before the modern era, from Late Antiquity to the eighteenth century, across a broad geographic range, from Spain to Poland and Byzantium to Boston. Refuting arguments that transgender people, experiences, and identities were non-existent or even impossible prior to the twentieth century, the book focuses on archives—literary texts, trial transcripts, documents, and artifacts—…

    Open Access•Anna Klosowska•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2019•References: 11

The traditional baptismal font of the kings of France for centuries, the so‐called baptistère de Saint Louis is part of 1750s–1900s French national legend. Against all evidence, the name suggests that it is the spoils of Louis IX's crusade of 1250–1254. In fact, that large, copper vessel of exceptional quality, with gold and silver figural decoration, was probably produced in Damascus or Cairo in 1320–1340, almost a century after French downfall …
