  • Turkmenistan’s Dilemma

    Dmitry Shlapentokh, Dmitry V Shlapentokh•ARTICLE•Slavonica•2021

Gas exports have emerged as the major source for hard currency. The income from gas exports made it possible to maintain the Russian state and economy. It is crucial for the stability of the regime. While trying to diversify the markets, the Kremlin has few choices. It could send gas either to China or Europe. Despite the existence of the Chinese market, the European market has continued to be extremely important. The Kremlin tried to minimise th…

  • Implementation of an Ideological Paradigm

    Dmitry Shlapentokh, Dmitry V Shlapentokh•ARTICLE•Arms Control•2014•Cited by: 4

Alexander Dugin, the well-known public philosopher, entered Russia's intellectual and political life in the 1990s, with strongly anti-American and often anti-Western statements. Dugin's philosophy, especially in its early version, was of great use for foreign analysts with its emphasis on the irreconcilable conflict between the Eurasian civilization – with Russia in its centre – and the Atlanticist civilization led by the United States. Eurasianism is a quasi-political and intellectual movement. Its representatives state that Russia is a unique blend of Slavic and non-Slavic cultures and ethnic groups. Eurasianists also emphasize the corporate nature of the Russian state which makes it quite different from the West. Eurasianism emerged in the 1920s as an anti-Bolshevik movement. Yet, through its evolution, Eurasianism has become closer and closer to the Soviet brand of Marxism. …

  • Apocalyptic Realism

Dmitry Shlapentokh, Dmitry V Shlapentokh et al.•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1996

The dissertation explores the following hypothesis: The Strugatskys' unabated popularity for the last three decades (1960-1990) among the educated Russian reading public--in particular, the scientific intelligentsia--can be attributed to something other than the superficial allure of science fiction escapism, and, vice versa, to something other than the political pleasure of recognizing a critical allegory in the ostensibly fantastic genre. The b…

  • Revolutionary as a career

    Open Access•Dmitry Shlapentokh, Dmitry V Shlapentokh•ARTICLE•Communist and Post-Communist…•1996

Historians usually saw bureaucratization of the revolutionary party as beginning only upon its accession to power, disregarding the importance to revolutionary politics of material incentives and control over funding. Yet the case of the Bolshevik party demonstrates that bureaucratization began long before the Bolshevik victory, and that material resources were essential for maintaining discipline and increasing the party size. Indeed, a revoluti…
