  • The face inversion effect or the face upright effect

Open Access•Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach et al.•ARTICLE•Cognition•2023

The face inversion effect (FIE) refers to the observation that presenting stimuli upside-down impairs the processing of faces disproportionally more than other mono-oriented objects. This has been taken as evidence that processing of faces and objects differ qualitatively. However, nearly all FIE studies are based on comparing individuation of upright faces, which most people are rather good at, with individuation of objects most people are much …

Open Access•Juliette Di Francesco, Andrea N Hanke et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2022

Indigenous knowledge provides valuable information on wildlife health and ecology, contributing to a broader understanding of the patterns and phenomena observed. Identifying and understanding these stressors and their imp…

  • Masha Cerovic, Les enfants de Staline: La guerre des partisans soviétiques (1941‐1944)

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2018

The Soviet guerrilla movement was one of the strongest in history. Half a million fighters, who killed many tens of thousands of Germans, but also locals, derailed thousands of trains and demolished thousands of locomotives. Masha Cerovic provides a first‐rate, up‐to‐date history of their struggle. The strength of Cerovic’s study lies in its sources. While she rarely refers to postwar published memoirs, her work draws mainly on archival records o…

  • Christian Ingrao, La promesse de l’Est: Espérance nazie et génocide, 1939‐1943

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•Cahiers du monde russe•2017•Cited by: 1

Subject to Christian Ingrao’s book are Nazi imaginations of Eastern Europe in a future during and after Germanization. Among other aspects, he is interested in the emotions involved in this utopia. The volume deals with the essence of German ethnic policies in the East. The study starts with a chronological survey of Nazi plans for German settlement in Polish and Soviet areas and for the removal of local populations deemed undesirable. This is fo…

  • Holocaust Landscapes

    Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•German History•2017

This book offers a fresh view at the German persecution of European Jews by looking at spatial aspects. Drawing from a wide range of archives, it is primarily based on diaries and published memoirs of, and especially postwar interviews with, persecuted Jews, supplemented by scholarly literature. The author concentrates on demonstrating ‘the diverse range of victim experiences, spatial strategies of survival and the shifting landscapes of the Holo…

  • Echoes of persecution: Sounds in early post-liberation Jewish memories

    Craig Gerlach•ARTICLE•Holocaust Studies•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This article proposes sound history as an approach to the history of persecution. There are close relations between sounds, social relations, and social change, and sound has special physical and emotional qualities. On that basis, the article analyzes actions by perpetrators and persecuted Jews, as represented in survivor accounts. It argues that sounds reflected the brutal, emotional, and unmediated character of violence. Sounds also convey way…

In diesem Band werden seine beiden Forschungsgebiete durch namhafte Autorinnen und Autoren zusammen…

  • Famine responses in the world food crisis 1972–5 and the World Food Conference of 1974

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•European Review of History Revue…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In the early 1970s, there was scarcity in the world grain market, soaring prices and famines in several countries of Asia and Africa. The commercial grain trade was expanded at the expense of food aid. After a brief look at policies addressing the situation in terms of modernised methods of agricultural production for small producers, the article sketches how such policies also affected relief efforts, from the low availability for food aid, the …

  • Annexations in Europe and the Persecution of Jews, 1939–1944

Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•ARTICLE•East Central Europe•2012

This contribution tries to explain why Jews were persecuted earlier or more fiercely in territories annexed by a state during World War II than in the mainland of that state. The case-studies covered are Nazi Germany, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the USSR. It is argued that internationally, similar policies of incorporation, especially the replacement of existing elites and the process of bringing in new settlers, worked against the Jews. Asid…

  • Extremely Violent Societies: Mass Violence in the Twentieth-Century World

    Open Access•Craig Gerlach, Christian Gerlach•BOOK•Extremely Violent Societies•2010

In this groundbreaking book Christian Gerlach traces the social roots of the extraordinary processes of human destruction involved in mass violence throughout the twentieth century. He argues that terms such as 'genocide' and 'ethnic cleansing' are too narrow to explain the diverse motives and interests that cause violence to spread in varying forms and intensities. From killings and expulsions to enforced hunger, collective rape, strategic bombi…

For over a century, various forms of crop cultivation, including family, community, and school gardens were a component of the foodways of many Alaska Native communities. This paper describes the history of these cropping practices in Athabascan communities of the Tanana and Yukon Flats regions of Alaska, and reveals a distinct agricultural tradition with roots that reach back as far as the late 1800s. Though American colonists, bureaucrats, and …

    Craig Gerlach•ARTICLE•Holocaust and Genocide Studies•1997

By autumn 1941 in most of the German-occupied USSR the last phase of the Holocaust had begun, with the exception of some ghettos in the Baltics and former Eastern Poland. Elsewhere the extermination would be almost total within three or four months. Only in a few places some Jews, together with political prisoners and hunger refugees, were concentrated in work camps; one of these was in the city of Mogilëv, in Eastern Belorussia. When most of the…

Open Access•Craig Gerlach, John C George et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1993

This study presents data and a method for reliably predicting bowhead (Balaena mysticetus) length using one length and one width measurement of the scapula. The bowhead scapula preserves well and is common in coastal arctic archaeological sites. The length measurement is taken as the maximum straight-line measurement along the axis, excluding the scapular cartilage. The width measurement is recorded as a maximum transverse measurement of the ossi…
