  • Disputed Frontiers: Open Water Crossings in the River Plate, 1918–1924

Open Access•Daniele Cristina Medeiros, Daniele Medeiros et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2025

This article examines the history of open-water crossings in the River Plate, a river that serves as both a geographical and symbolic border between Argentina and Uruguay. Through a transnational perspective, it explores how these crossings became a site of sporting competition and national identity formation. Initially, Argentine and Uruguayan swimmers sought to complete the crossing as a test of endurance, reflecting the growing sportization of…

    Open Access•Jordi Estevez, Jordi Estévez Escalera•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 21

This paper examines the relationship between the extinction of carnivores and the disappearance of the Neanderthals. The Iberian Peninsula, as the westernmost point of Eurasia, is the key for an understanding of either the replacement or the continuity of hominids. Cave bear evolutionary history shares some trends with that of the Neanderthals. This means that most of the causes cited to explain the disappearance of Neanderthals have some implica…

  • Archaeological analysis of shell middens in the Beagle Channel, Tierra del Fuego Island

Open Access•Jordi Estevez, Jordi Estévez Escalera et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2001•Cited by: 5•References: 2

An archaeological programme beginning in 1993, in the Beagle Channel, aims to describe the long-term record of maritime faunal exploitation, and relate it to the environmental record. Results from quantitative analysis of remains from a series of shell midden excavations indicate a remarkably stable and resilient marine biota over the last 6500 years. Only in the previous century have there been changes in fauna, which might correspond to recent …
