Lacanian Anxieties
This essay argues that Lacanian psychoanalysis and trans studies can indeed accommodate each other rather than appear incommensurable. It first acknowledges the problem of Lacanian transphobia via the recent work of Slavoj Žižek and Jacques-Alain Miller, and organizes their arguments around three related psychoanalytic concerns: demand, desire, and the real of sexual difference. In Meeting the Universe Halfway, the feminist theorist Karen Barad explores the indeterminate nature of measurement. Drawing on empirical research into quantum entanglement, they develop an axiomatic approach to configuring the fundamental interconnections between processes of measurement and making. The present study examined the extent to which cultural identity is related to substance abuse and aggressive behaviors among Jamaican adolescents.
