  • Hunting Strategies and Game Exploitation Organization in the Magdalenian: An Integrated Approach Based on Mortality Profiles and Stable Isotopes at Chaves Cave (Huesca, Spain)

    Open Access•Alejandro Sierra, M Balasse et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Understanding hunting strategies in Upper Paleolithic contexts remains challenging due to the complex relationships between prey behavior, environmental conditions, and human decision‐making. Addressing these dynamics requires integrating archeozoological, geospatial, and geochemical proxies capable of capturing demographic patterns, landscape accessibility, and seasonal environmental signals. This study examines the Magdalenian level 2b of Chave…

  • The land of the last hunter-gatherer groups in the Ebro basin: Forgers of their own destiny

    Open Access•Alfonso Alday, Ander Rodríguez-Lejarza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological…•2024•References: 87

In this paper we adopt a new perspective on the chronology and settlement strategies of the last Mesolithic societies of the Ebro basin. For this purpose, we applied concepts from population biology (carrying capacity) and redefined the catchment area of the sites using GIS analysis tools. We concluded that the last hunter-gatherer groups lived below their means, so that physical and cultural reproduction was guaranteed. Therefore, the changes th…

  • There and back again: Late Mesolithic technological change in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula

    Open Access•Adriana Soto, Ander Rodríguez-Lejarza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 4

A profound change took place in the lithic technology of the last hunter-gatherer societies in Western Europe and North Africa at the end of the Early Holocene. In a short period, several technological innovations were adopted in geographically, socially and culturally different contexts; a situation that raises many questions about the mechanisms that enabled this successful expansion and acceptance. In this paper, we propose a regional approach…

  • Geomorphological, chronological, and paleoenvironmental context of the Mousterian site at Roca San Miguel (Arén, Huesca, Spain) from the penultimate to the last glacial cycle

    Open Access•José Luis Peña-Monné, Jose Luís Peña‐Monné et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2022

The Roca San Miguel (RSM) archaeological site was occupied during Mousterian times. Here we present a geoarchaeological and paleoenvironmental reconstruction of the site. Five stratigraphic units (A to E) formed by different archaeological levels are identified. Three optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages show that Unit A dates to between 169.6 ± 9.1 and 151.9 ± 11.1 ka, during the penultimate glacial period (PGP), and contains numerous si…
