  • Men’s Help-Seeking Willingness and Disclosure of Depression

    Open Access•Hege H Bye, Frida L Måseidvåg et al.•ARTICLE•Sex Roles•2025•Citada por: 1•Referências: 8

When experiencing depressive symptoms, many people delay or avoid seeking professional help. We investigate whether misperceptions of other’s willingness to seek help can be a potential barrier for help-seeking by examining pluralistic ignorance (i.e., when members of a group mistakenly believe that others’ cognitions or behaviors differ systematically from their own) in men and women’s perceptions of others’ help-seeking willingness. Experiment …

  • The role of norms and acculturation in migrants' willingness to seek mental health care

    Open Access•Shanette M Harris, Hege H Bye et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2025•Referências: 28

Our results suggest that participants may show more willingness to seek help than they believe others in their own group do. This misperception of norms may contribute to hindering help-seeking. While all group norms played a role in own willingness to seek help, presumed approval from family and friends may play a more pivotal role. The role of own group and majority group norms depends on individuals' acculturation orientations. Tailored interv…

  • Integration Is Correlated With Mental Health Help-Seeking From the General Practitioner

Open Access•Shanette M Harris, Samantha Marie Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Despite a seemingly higher need, refugees in Europe tend to underuse mental health (MH) services. To better understand this underuse, it is important to understand refugees' willingness and ability to seek help from their general practitioner (GP) when experiencing MH problems. We employed a combined vignette and survey design to explore how the GP fits into the larger context of help-seeking preferences among a sample of Syrian refugees in Norwa…

  • The Local-National Gap in Intergroup Attitudes and Far-Right Underperformance in Local Elections

    Open Access•Hege H Bye, Bygne et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Political Science•2021•Referências: 18

The far right typically performs worse in local elections than in national ones. We propose that a key reason for this underperformance is the difference in how intergroup attitudes manifest and are informed in local and national settings. We document the existence of a local-national gap in intergroup attitudes through survey experiments and open-ended survey questions that randomly vary whether study-participants are asked about the national or…

  • Explanatory models and help-seeking for symptoms of PTSD and depression among Syrian refugees

    Open Access•Aarethun, V Aarethun et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 36

These findings point to the need to consider transformations following forced migration when studying aspects of explanatory models, preferred help-seeking, and coping strategies in refugee groups

  • Emotions as mediators of the stereotype–discrimination relationship

    Open Access•Hege H Bye, Henrik Herrebrøden•ARTICLE•Group Processes & Intergroup…•2017•Citada por: 6•Referências: 4

A central theoretical assumption in the Behaviors from Intergroup Affect and Stereotypes (BIAS) map framework is that emotions mediate the relationships between stereotypes and intergroup behavior. Despite the BIAS map’s popularity, very few studies have tested the model’s mediation hypotheses and none have tested them by replicating the original study (Cuddy, Fiske, & Glick, 2007, Study 1). We provide a replication in a Norwegian sample ( N = 24…

  • The use of multidisciplinary teams to support child welfare clients

Elisabeth Hesjedal, Anette Iversen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2015•Citada por: 2•Referências: 12

Meeting the educational needs of young people in the child welfare system (CWS) requires effective collaboration between the CWS and the education system. In Norway and in other countries, there is an increased focus on interprofessional collaboration to support child welfare clients in and around schools. Multidisciplinary teams are employed to facilitate collaboration and coordinate supportive measures. The purpose of this article is to describ…

  • Intended Self-Presentation Tactics in Job Interviews

Open Access•Gro M Sandal, Fons Van De Vijver et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 51

Intended self-presentation in job interviews was examined among university students in 10 countries ( N = 3,509). The aim was to assess cross-cultural differences in the endorsement of self-presentation tactics, and whether such differences could be explained by cultural values and socioeconomic variables. The Cultural Impression Management Scale-Applicant Scale (CIM-A) was used that measures assertiveness, individual excellence, accommodation, a…

  • Cultural fit and ethnic background in the job interview

Open Access•Hege H Bye, Jøri Gytre Horverak et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cross…•2013•Citada por: 4•Referências: 8

Employing an experimental design, we investigated how Norwegian managers’ ( N = 78) evaluations and intended hiring decisions varied with job applicants’ ethnic background (immigrant vs. native Norwegian mainstreamer) and the degree to which the candidates’ self-presentation fitted Norwegian cultural norms (level of cultural fit). The participants viewed video clips of applicants whose ethnicity and self-presentation was manipulated. Irrespective…

  • Managers' Evaluations of Immigrant Job Applicants

    Open Access•Jøri Gytre Horverak, Hege H Bye et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Citada por: 6•Referências: 32

This study examined the impact of immigrant job applicants' private domain acculturation preferences on managers' evaluations of person-organization (P-O) fit and hiring decisions. We employed an experimental design and presented Norwegian managers ( N = 74) with video-clips of three job applicants. One of the applicants' (target) ethnicity (Norwegian vs. Turkish) and private domain acculturation preferences (separated, assimilated, and integrate…
