  • The Indirect Displacement Hypothesis

    Open Access•Rodney D Green, Judy K Mulusa et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2017•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Stereotypes abound about the clash between newcomers to urban neighborhoods and their longstanding residents. In a case study of Columbia Heights in the District of Columbia, the preferences and attitudes of newcomers and longstanding residents are compared. The comparison will help assess the extent to which indirect displacement pressures in the domain of retail activity might be occurring in Columbia Heights. Data from surveys conducted in 200…

  • Black Progress through Business Improvement

    Open Access•Rodney D Green, Sue E Houchins•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2017

In the spirit of further expanding the heretofore unsung contributions of African American economists, we present two unpublished works from the 1930s of Joseph Roosevelt Houchins. They focus on Black business development and strategy. Biographical information and historical context for Houchins's life experiences during the twentieth century are included in an introduction. Houchins was a member of President Franklin Roosevelt's Black Cabinet, a…

  • Going Full Circle With Teacher Feedback

    Open Access•Jo-Anne L Manswell Butty, Lucy A Wakiaga et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2015

Research on the evaluation of early childhood programs focuses mainly on its outcomes rather than its process with often little attention given to the role that feedback to teachers in pre-kindergarten (pre-k) programs plays in the larger cycle of the evaluation process. This article provides a case example of a multiyear evaluation of community-based pre-k programs serving about 360 three- and four-year old children over a 5-year period in the D…

  • Introduction to the Special Issue on Jobs and the Future of the US Economy

Open Access•Haydar Kurban, Rodney D Green•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2012

This special issue of the Review presents selected and revised papers from the October 2010 Conference on Jobs and the Future of the US Economy held at Howard University. It includes several bold “outside the box” proposals for addressing the endemic conditions of unemployment and racism in the U.S. economy. These include augmented and targeted Keynesiani deficit finance, functional finance, a federal jobs guarantee, industrial policy, realignmen…

  • NGOs Address Structural Racism

Open Access•Rodney D Green, Tiffany Hamelin et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2011•References: 6

The long history of institutional and historical racism found an explosive expression in the events around Katrina in New Orleans. Racial inequalities were evident in the actual destruction caused by the hurricane and even more significantly in the government response to the disaster. The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) sector provided alternative approaches to recovery and reconstruction, but such alternatives were inadequate to counter the …

  • Housing, Race, and Recovery from Hurricane Katrina

Open Access•Rodney D Green, Marie Kouassi et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 1

The destruction of private and public housing in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina was greatest among African Americans due to historic settlement patterns. Data for 13 planning districts within Orleans Parish (the city of New Orleans proper) that document the extent of housing destruction, the distribution of population by race, and the share of returned population at 2 and 5 year points across these planning districts are evaluated using …

  • The Impact of Housing Stressors on the Mental Health of a Low-Income African-American Population

Open Access•Rodney D Green, Marie Kouassi et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Health and disease reflect broad social conditions including economic, environmental, and cultural components. The impact of challenging housing conditions experienced by low-income African American households on their mental health is an example of this principle. Do physical housing conditions, the presence of roaches and rodents, plumbing defects, and heating/cooling problems contribute to mental health dysfunction such as being depressed, fee…

  • Communists and the Fight for Jobs and Revolution

Open Access•Rodney D Green, Michael Isaacson et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2011•References: 8

Winning in the battle for jobs is two-fold: making gains in jobs and relief, and making gains in the development of anti-racist revolutionary class consciousness. Marxists and institutionalists have shown theoretically that unemployment is endemic to capitalism. The global experience of the 20th century validates this view. Efforts to ease the negative social effects of unemployment can modestly and temporarily assist distressed unemployed worker…

  • Scenarios for Economic Development in An Inner City Community in the District of Columbia

Open Access•Daniel Muhammad, Mashadi Manong et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Black Political…•2000

Despite the considerable amount of commercial activity taking place in LGA, the area reamins economically challenged. The low participation rate of residents in the labor market is a likely contributing factor to this paradox. Nearly 13 percent of residents in these areas are unemployed, nearly 30 [ercent of the adults are living below the poverty level, and almost half of the adults are not in the workforce. One of the reasons for these infortun…

  • Quantitative sources for studying urban industrial slavery in the antebellum US South

    Rodney D Green•ARTICLE•Immigrants & Minorities•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The composition of antebellum Southern urban industrial labour forces is an area requiring careful quantitative analysis. Southern elites worried about slaves in urban industry (especially hired slaves) because they experienced wage‐labour freedoms and so had greater opportunites to resist slavery. The distribution of late antebellum Richmond tobacco factory workers between hired slaves and owned slaves is studied by examining property tax record…
