  • The Right Side of History? The Political Use of the Narrative of Progress in Contemporary Feminisms

    Open Access•Curswan Andrews•ARTICLE•Secuencia•2024•References: 60

This essay examines how the narrative of historical progress is used in contemporary feminisms. It argues that this narrative is used with a specific political aim: to characterise disagreements between feminists as confrontations between the modern and the retrograde. It observes that this positioning often employs patriarchal rhetoric which prefers personal criticism to a discussion of ideas. To illustrate this hypothesis, the article analyses …

  • Jaime E. Rodríguez O. and the Constitution of Cádiz in Contemporary Historiography

    Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•2023•Cited by: 1

This article analyzes historiographical discussions relating to the reception and interpretation of the 1812 Spanish Constitution—the Constitution of Cádiz—in Spanish America, with a particular focus on the debates around the influence of Cádiz in Mexico after 1821. It argues that Jaime E. Rodríguez O. formed part of revisionist group of scholars who challenged early nationalist narratives surrounding independence and political ideologies in Mexi…

  • Reform, Rebellion and Party in Mexico, 1836-1861

Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2023

Brian Hamnett's new book straddles two periods more often treated separately: “Independent Mexico” (1821–55) and the Wars of Reform (1857–61). This is an interesting choice. Undoubtedly, the time frame allows him to analyze the changing of the political class's generational guard: from the domination of men who had reached adulthood before the insurgency (Lucas Alamán, Anastasio Bustamante, Antonio López de Santa Anna) to the following generation…

  • El legado de las Siete Leyes: Una reevaluación de las aportaciones del constitucionalismo centralista a la historia constitucional mexicana

    Open Access•Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Historia Mexicana•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 8

  • Moderation vs. Conservation

    Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•2017•Cited by: 1

This essay discusses the institutions that constitution-writers in early Independent Mexico (1820s–1830s) established with the aim of protecting constitutional order from abuses by one or more of the powers of government. There were two guiding principles to these institutions: moderation and conservation. Moderating institutions should act as buffers between Legislative and Executive Powers to prevent either power encroaching onto the prerogativ…

  • Alternatives to the constitution of Cádiz in New Spain: Republicanism and the insurgent constitutional decree of Apatzingán (1814)

    Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article compares the Decreto Constitucional para la libertad de la América Mexicana, published in Apatzingán by the insurgents of New Spain in 1814, with the 1812 Constitution of Cádiz which established a constitutional monarchy in the Spanish Empire. It argues that the Decreto Constitucional cannot be understood as simply a product of Hispanic political thought and a reflection of the Cádiz text. Rather, it contends that the decree publishe…

  • Constitutional Projects for the Division of Powers in Mexico during Iturbide's Empire, 1821-1823

    Open Access•Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American Studies•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article examines the division of powers established in a number of constitutional projects presented during the First Mexican Empire (1821-3). The essay rejects the idea, present in much recent historiography, that constitutional debate in Mexico was exclusively shaped by the experience of Spanish government. Instead it argues that the empire's politicians drew on a wide range of theories, ideas and examples from other constitutional systems

  • Los primeros proyectos constitucionales en México y su influencia británica (1821–1836)

    Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•2011•Cited by: 3

  • The Defence of Iturbide or the Defence of Federalism? Rebellion in Jalisco and the Conspiracy of the Calle de Celaya, 1824

    Open Access•Curswan Andrews, Catherine Andrews•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article investigates a planned rebellion in favour of Agustín de Iturbide organised by a group of his supporters in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1824. It shows that the rebels in Guadalajara were in close communication with a second cadre of conspirators in Mexico City. By examining the various plans drawn up by the rebels, the article demonstrates the existence of two separate and apparently contradictory aims for the rebellion: the return of I…
