Oeuvre mathématique d’al-Sijzī. Volume 1
Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Jalīl al-Sijzī was a geometer, astronomer and astrologer who worked in the second half of the tenth century AD in Iran and surrounding areas. Although he did not belong to the most creative mathematicians in the Islamic tradition, he was competent, and a large part of his geometrical oeuvre has survived. The books under review contain editions of the original Arabic texts and French translations of roughly two-third…
On Translating Mathematics
Mathematical texts raise particular dilemmas for the translator. With its arm’s-length relation to verbal expression and long-standing “mathematics is written for mathematicians” ethos, mathematics lends itself awkwardly to textually centered analysis. Otherwise sound standards of historical scholarship can backfire when rigidly upheld in a mathematical context. Mathematically inclined historians have had more faith in a purported empathic sixth …
The scholar and the fencing master
Studies in the History of the Exact Sciences in Honour of David Pingree
This collection of essays reflects the wide range of David Pingree's expertise in the scientific texts (above all, concerning astronomy and astrology) of Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, India, Persia, and the medieval Arabic, Hebrew and Latin traditions. Both theoretical aspects and the practical applications of the exact sciences-in time keeping, prediction of the future, and the operation of magic-are dealt with. The book includes several critical…
Ideals and Realities in Ibn al-Haytham's Mathematical Oeuvre
The Burning Mirrors of Diocles
Much has been done on the publication of original sources in Arabic during the past 30 years, but much more remains to be done. Some of the recent multiple editions are unnecessary duplication of work and therefore waste of energy. This energy could be better spent on the publication of unpublished sources, and on studies involving the contextualization of Islamic sciences. Furthermore, historians of pre-modern science should work on the populari…
