Vladislavic, Ivan: The Folly
Global Photographies: Memory - History - Archives
How is photography connected to global practices? This is a first edited collection to trace the relationship between history, photography and memory in a global perspective on three interrelated levels: firstly, in the artistic and cultural production of pictures, secondly, in the decoding of colonial and contemporary photography, and thirdly, in collecting photographs in picture archives dealing with colonial, anthropological and family photogr…
In the name of the Other? Refugee theatre and the value of "illegal" life in Britain
Drawing on refugee theatre performances by companies such as ice&fire, this article explores the politics of Testimonial Refugee Theatre in Britain and how illegal life is performed in contemporary verbatim theatre productions. Within the realm of narratives of flight, political drama holds an important position as a genre, because of its ability to create intimate immediacy. In theatre halls and post-performance gatherings, audiences can feel re…
Fragile balance: Imaginary Europes, transcultural aesthetics and discourses of European identity in Pawel Pawlikowski’s Last Resort and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse
In light of recent accounts of ongoing Europeanization processes, this article scrutinizes images of Europe and Europeanization in Pawel Pawlikowski’s Last Resort and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse in order to explore how British low-budget independent film and Hollywood mainstream cinema realize imaginary Europes on screen. The emerging imaginary Europes and cinematic perspectives on Europeanization, it is argued, illuminate disenchanted visions o…
Imaginary Europes, phantoms of the past, conceptions of the future
This special issue opens up a critical space to reflect on literary and cinematographic images of Europe, as they come alive within and without the bounds of what we, from a geopolitical and cultur

Memories of migration: Tracing the past through movement in film
This essay offers a comparative and multidirectional study of filmic representations and memory work dealing with flight and migration by means of short video films, experimental documentaries, African feature film and Hollywood cinema. Given that all selected films are deeply concerned with the question of how we collectively recollect individual movements, the mnemonic cartographies discussed here describe contemporary routes refugees and migra…
Die Kunst der Migration: Aktuelle Positionen zum europäisch-afrikanischen Diskurs. Material - Gestaltung - Kritik

Facing the East in the West: Images of Eastern Europe in British Literature, Film and Culture
Over the last decade, migration flows from Central and Eastern Europe have become an issue in political debates about human rights, social integration, multiculturalism and citizenship in Great Britain. The increasing number of Eastern Europeans living in Britain has provoked ambivalent and diverse responses, including representations in film and literature that range from travel writing, humorous fiction, mockumentaries, musicals, drama and chil…

Illegal Diasporas and African Refugees in Abdulrazak Gurnah's By the Sea
Taking its cue from recent studies about African diasporas and Khalid Koser's thought- provoking work on illegal diasporas, this article sets out to investigate representations of African refugees and illegal diasporas in Abdulrazak Gurnah's topical novel By the Sea (2001). By relating Koser's concept of illegal diasporas to Jacques Derrida's understanding of unconditional hospitality this article considers narrative modes through which illegalit…

The new Europeans’: The image of the African refugee in European literature
This essay examines the representation of African refugees and asylum seekers in European literature in general, as well recent life writings and literature for young adults in particular. Examples will be drawn from writers as diverse as Benjamin Zephaniah and Senait G. Mehari. It is argued that the selected refugee stories invest in narrating an imagined community of ‘the new Europeans’ and thus invite readers to a plural reading of history. Fo…
Transcriptional repression by the Drosophila even-skipped protein: Definition of a minimal repression domain.
We have used a transient expression assay employing Drosophila tissue culture cells to study the transcriptional repression activity of the homeo domain protein Even-skipped (Eve). Eve was found to repress all promoters that contained Eve-binding sites, including both TATA-containing and TATA-lacking minimal promoters, as well as promoters activated by several different classes of activator proteins. These findings suggest that the general transc…
