English Societal Laws as the Origins of the Comprehensive Slave Laws of the British West Indies
Many Australian academics and jurists regard Australian High Court Chief Justice Sir Owen Dixon’s judgment in Parker v The Queen (1963) as Australia’s ‘declaration of judicial independence’ from Privy Council precedent and from a unified common law more generally. His expression in Parker is sharp, clear; Dixon makes no apologies for his finding. Nor does he limit the decision to its facts: he states, quite clearly, that he believes that the Aust…
Tracing British West Indian Slavery Laws
This book provides a legal historical insight into colonial laws on enslavement and the plantation system in the British West Indies. The volume is a work of comparative legal history of the English-speaking Caribbean which concentrates on how the laws of England served to catalyse the slavery laws and also legislation pertaining to post-emancipation societies. The book illustrates how these “borrowed” laws from England not only developed colonia…
The Impact of British Parliamentary Legislations on Enslaved Women of the British Caribbean 1780s-1800s
Colonial slavery contained three interrelated aspects of law that transformed with the introduction of African slavery. Firstly, defining enslaved people as property, secondly, establishing forms of control over enslaved people, and thirdly, developing legal definitions of race, which distinguishes African enslaved people and their descendants from the rest of the population. The introduction of Imperial laws and their transplantation within the …

Research into adolescence
Research into developmental psychology in Australia has followed a pattern which is similar to that of other countries by concentrating first on the child, then on life span development and more recently on gerontology. Adolescence has been the neglected area of developmental research. An examination of the early work of Granville Stanley Hall (1904) and Sigmund Freud (1917, 1925) together with an analysis of classical and modem theories of adole…
Recognition accuracy, stereotypic preference, aversion, and subjective judgment of body appearance in adolescents and young adults
Influence of Age and Body Proportions on Weight Loss of Obese Women after Treatment
At the conclusion of a treatment program for obesity, the influence of age and several pretreatment measures of body proportion (weight, height, symphysis height, finger tip span, body surface area, and linearity index) on weight loss were assessed. All 42 volunteering females lost weight; however, the extent of loss was uninfluenced by the above variables. Weight loss was highly correlated with changes in measures of body surface (.77) and linea…
Measurement of depth of desired and experienced sexual involvement at different stages of dating
A scale was constructed which may be used to measure depth of desired and experienced sexual involvement during various stages of dating. Consisting of 12 items, the scale was constructed after administering a scale of 16 items, derived from previously published scales, to 259 subjects. Test‐retest reliability for the desired behaviors and actual experiences of 61 subjects was found to range as high as .86 for dating desires to .96 for dating beh…

Self-recognition of the face

A developmental study of the effects of instructions on visual shape judgements
Previous developmental studies of visual shape judgements have failed to instruct subjects clearly as to the type of shape judgements required. Using the method of adjustment 180 subjects in five age groups, 6, 8 10, 12 and 19 years, were instructed to judge either the real or projected shape of an elliptical standard slanted 39, 57 and 72 degrees from the fronto‐parallel. No age changes were found in the tendency towards shape constancy. Objecti…

Adolescent dating intimacy
Adolescent Sex Education
While the aim of the special sex education lecture given to pupils by authorities invited from outside the educational system is laudable, the content is not based on empirical investigation of the needs of youth. A survey of 1,426 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18 years showed that greater emphasis is needed on the social aspects of dating behaviour than on reproductive biology. An obvious educational need with social implications remain…
Age and Susceptibility to Same Sex Peer Pressure
S ummary . 100 male and female students between the ages of 5 and 19 years were subjected individually to an obviously and unanimously wrong decision by a group of their same‐sex peers. Conformity differed among the age groups but not between the sexes. Maximum conformity was found in the adolescent age group
