Caring for "Hassle-Free Highs" in Amsterdam
In this article we present some of our ethnographic findings from the city of Amsterdam, where health authorities and practitioners have implemented harm reduction strategies that build on and reinforce young drug users' practices of self-regulation and care. Amsterdam's harm reduction policies build on the premises that harm is not a direct, always present consequence of recreational drug use and that harm reduction strategies will be more effec…
Anthropology with algorithms
Based on a study of more than twenty thousand reports on drug experiences from the online drug education portal Erowid, this article argues that the integration of ethnographic methods with computational methods and digital data analysis, including so-called big data, is not only possible but highly rewarding. The analysis of 'natively' digital data from sites like Facebook, message boards, and web archives can offer glimpses into worlds of pract…
Harm Reduction From Below

The labor involved in protective practices and that which ultimately informs harm reduction from below follows th…
Educated Guesses and Other Ways to Address the Pharmacological Uncertainty of Designer Drugs
This study examines how experimentation with designer drugs is mediated by the Internet. We selected a popular drug forum that presents reports on self-experimentation with little or even completely unexplored designer drugs to examine: (1) how participants report their “trying out” of new compounds and (2) how participants reduce the pharmacological uncertainty associated with using these substances. Our methods included passive observation onli…
