  • Understanding intentionality of fentanyl use and drug overdose risk

Open Access•Courtney McKnight, Chenziheng Allen Weng et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2023

As the proportion of drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl continues to increase in the US, monitoring exposure to and possible changes in intention to use fentanyl among people who use drugs (PWUD) is of great public health importance. This mixed methods study examines intentionality of fentanyl use among persons who inject drugs (PWID) in New York City during a period of unprecedently high rates of drug overdose mortality. Between October 202…

  • Recurrent Injecting Drug Use as a Mediator between Psychiatric Disorder and Non-Fatal Overdose

    Donelle M Barnes, David M Barnes et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2022

Background Unintentional drug overdose has increased markedly in the United States. Studies document an association between psychiatric disorder and unintentional overdose; we extend this research through a preliminary test of a causal model of recurrent injection drug use mediating this relationship. Methods In a cross-sectional study of 241 adults in New York City with a possible current substance use disorder, we conducted conventional and Imai…

Open Access•Hoang Thi Giang, Nguyen Quang Duc et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2022

The case of Hai Phong shows that it is possible, during times of COVID-19 pandemic, to maintain access to harm reduction and care and to prevent HIV and HCV transmission among PWID in a resource-limited setting where severe social distancing restrictions are implemented. Further research is needed to assess the consequences of long-term economic difficulties and the impact of actual spread of SARS-Cov2 that has since emerged in Haiphong

  • High-risk behaviors and their association with awareness of HIV status among participants of a large-scale prevention intervention in Athens, Greece

    Open Access•Ioanna D Pavlopoulou, Stavroula K Dikalioti et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

The prevalence of risky behaviors related to drug injection decreased in the context of Aristotle. Knowledge of HIV infection was associated with safer drug injection-related behaviors among PWID. This highlights the need for comprehensive interventions that scale-up HIV testing and help PWID become aware of their HIV status

Sel Hwahng, Bennett Allen et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2019

Latinas comprise the largest racial/ethnic group of trans women (male-to-female transgender people) in New York City, where HIV seroprevalence among trans Latinas has been found to be as high as 49%. Despite this population's high risk of HIV, little is known about resilience among trans Latinas that may provide protective health factors. Six focus groups and one in-depth interview were conducted with 34 low-income trans/gender-variant people of …

Don Des Jarlais, Don C Des Jarlais et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Combined prevention for HIV among persons who inject drugs (PWID) has led to greatly reduced HIV transmission among PWID in many high-income settings, but these successes have not yet been replicated in resource-limited settings. Haiphong, Vietnam experienced a large HIV epidemic among PWID, with 68% prevalence in 2006. Haiphong has implemented needle/syringe programs, methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), and anti-retroviral treatment (ART), bu…

Although Hispanics are overrepresented in AIDS cases in the United States, little information is available to help understand differences in drug and sex risk behaviors in Hispanic subgroups, needed to develop appropriate prevention programs. This study reports on HIV-related risk behaviors in three groups of Hispanic prostitutes recruited in the United States: Dominican (77), recruited in Washington Heights, NY, Mexican (151), recruited in El Pa…

  • Shifts to Risk and Reward

    Open Access•Don Des Jarlais, Don C Des Jarlais•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

The expected payoffs for the risky alternatives in a standard shift-to-risk experiment were investigated rather than controlled. As predicted, a significant shift to reward was found. The group expectations of the risky payoffs were higher than the means of the individual expectations. The shift to reward was significantly, but lowly, correlated with a cotemporaneous shift to risk. Implications of the shift to reward are discussed

  • HIV prevention for injection drug users in China and Vietnam

Open Access•Ted Hammett, Don Des Jarlais et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2007

A pattern of serious injection drug user (IDU) driven HIV epidemics in Asia, with emerging evidence of generalization through heterosexual transmission, indicates the need for interventions focusing on both drug- and sex-related risk reduction. In a cross-border HIV prevention project for IDUs in northern Vietnam and southern China, peer educators disseminated risk reduction information to IDUs in the community and provided 20,000-25,000 sterile …
