Die Beziehungen zwischen Aktiengesellschaft und Aktionär im managergeführten Großunternehmen, 1871–1937
The formation of large corporations and the development of the joint stock company, beginning in the last third of the 19th century, are closely linked. However, when the average German stock corporations began to grow and when corporate complexity increased has not been studied extensively. The dataset presented here, consisting of balance sheet information from 91 joint stock companies for the period 1870 to 1935, offers a contribution to knowl…
The Social Background of Prussian Inventors and Entrepreneurs during the First Industrial Revolution
In this paper, we study the social background of Prussian inventors in the mid-19 th century, using biographical information for over 1,500 individuals that filed a patent in Prussia. There are four major findings. First, there is evidence for broadly based inventive activity, including a large number of inventors from middle- and lower-class backgrounds. Second, concerning the role of human capital, we argue that a combination of formal and info…
Do Legal Differences Matter? A Comparison of German Patent Law Regimes before 1877
In this article, we give an overview of the differences in German patent legislations between 1815 and 1876. German patent laws differed in particular with regard to the application and approval system, the treatment of foreign applicants, and patent fees. Differences in the former two categories provide an explanation why the number of patents was considerably lower in Prussia than in other states. While the number of Prussian patents per capita…
Patent Law and Innovation in Europe during the Industrial Revolution
Human capital, access to markets, and innovation-friendly institutions were important preconditions for the acceleration of technological change during the industrial revolution. In this context, the recent literature discusses the role of patents. Given their dual nature, patents may have either stimulated innovation through the creation of financial incentives for inventors or they may have hampered innovation, because they created monopolies t…
Technology transfer via foreign patents in Germany, 1843-77
This article analyses the spread of innovation in mid-nineteenth-century Germany using foreign patents as an indicator for technology transfer. It introduces a new dataset of over 1,400 patents granted in the Grand Duchy of Baden between 1843 and 1877. The data show that Baden's technology import via foreign patents from German and non-German inventors was important. This technology transfer was broadly based, although technologies related to the…
Börsenzulassungsstellen, Reichsregierung und die (Selbst-)Regulierung der Mehrstimmrechtsaktie, 1919-1937
The German system of corporate governance changed considerably after the end of the Great War. This change was, among other things, marked by the rise of shares with multiple voting rights, often concentrated in the hands of incumbent business leaders. The development was publicly criticized by the promoters of a more equal corporate constitution and led the Imperial government as well as stock exchanges to consider reform. The article traces thi…

Civil Servants’ Living Standards in the Grand-Duchy of Baden, 1780–1913
It is argued that from the early 19th century onwards Civil Servants received a remuneration that ensured a good standard of living and reflected social status. Yet, there are few empirical studies which test this hypothesis. This article attempts to bridge this gap by computing real living standards of district magistrates in Baden during the 19th century using a new consumption basket reflecting the material and social needs of members of the u…
