    Open Access•Tatiana Argounova‐low•ARTICLE•Museum Anthropology•2026•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This paper is devoted to the collections of old Sakha objects produced by Indigenous craftsmen in the north of the Russian Empire and now located in many museums around the world. For several centuries, objects representing Sakha material culture were taken away from their place of origin by explorers, scholars, collectors, and missionaries under the paradigms of “salvage ethnography,” evidence of exotic travels, specimens, and mementos. These ob…

    Open Access•Tatiana Argounova‐low, Tatiana Argounova-Low•ARTICLE•Sibirica•2023•References: 10

This article is devoted to the work of ivory carving artists in Sakha (Yakutia). It analyzes the ways craftsmen use, engage, and relate to mammoth ivory in their creative work. They start each carving project with consideration of the material, its quality and condition. Material often dictates the ways the creative idea develops and predetermines the outcome. Attention to the material is an important aspect of the relational engagement with it. …

  • Introduction

Is the planet on a one-way collision course with self-destruction? Are cars, roads and everything that goes along with them the main culprits for the end of the world as we know it? In addressing the nebulous, amorphous and material ties between vehicles and infrastructure, this Special Section of SA/AS provides some cross-cultural histories for better understanding commonplace as well as alternative paths, tracks and travel experiences. It also …

The article demonstrates how development of the car cultures in the city of Yakutsk, northeastern Russia, is facilitated by the proximity of Japan, where street racing and drift driving became popular through such outlets as the manga series, animation films, YouTube, and a blockbuster film, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. These influences, which arrived in Siberia from across the Sea of Japan and Hollywood, highlight the shifting geograph…

    Open Access•Tatiana Argounova‐low, Mikhail Prisyazhnyi•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This article examines the Lena Road (Doroga Lena), which is situated in the eastern part of Russia and stretches through the southern and central parts of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). A former traditional path, it was developed into a corridor for accessing rich mineral resources in the area during the Soviet period. The road is associated with the socialist past and its meta-narrative that highlights roads' industrial profile. In this articl…

  • Breaking the Code

    Open Access•Tatiana Argounova‐low, Tatiana Argounova-Low et al.•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2015

The article addresses the problems related to alcohol abuse and its medical treatment called 'coding'. The treatment by 'coding' subjugates alcoholics to a relationship between them and other more dominant agents. Despite such pressure being very powerful, we argue that alcoholics develop their strategies and ways to manoeuvre and manipulate these dominant relationships. The article explains why treatment by coding is often ineffective

  • Narrating the Road

    Tatiana Argounova‐low, Tatiana Argounova-Low•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2012•Cited by: 20•References: 16

This article proposes that the term ‘road’ provides a concept of theoretical value for anthropological discussions of mobility. Based on ethnographic research in two neighbouring settlements in Siberia, I discuss the range of stories indigenous residents offered during our discussions of roads. Their definitions of roads contrast with those used more globally. A hodological approach to the concept of road demonstrates connections among ideas of k…

    Open Access•Tatiana Argounova‐low, Tatiana Argounova-Low•ARTICLE•Sibirica•2009

This issue of Sibirica focuses on one of the Siberian regions—The Republic of Sakha (Iakutiia). This in-depth presentation has two main goals: we hope to provide the readers with a more detailed look into the current situation in the republic and to start a new initiative of the journal to take close-up looks at various Siberian regions. For Siberian studies Sakha represents an interesting case: on the one hand, its experience and developments ar…

The article looks into changes that affected the food habits and concludes with an analysis of the social meaning of the …

This article is about natsionalizm as an instrumental concept used manipulatively in the Soviet state by the ruling elite. It argues that accusations of natsionalizm in the Soviet Union served a particular purpose of manipulation and punishment. An instrumental character of accusations turned the victims into enemies and sacrificial scapegoats in order to prove the righteousness of the Soviet society. This article uses case studies from the recen…

The paper presents a snapshot of the city-village connections in the city of Yakutsk and an anthropological account of the dynamics of the relationship between the city and villages around it. Demographic changes that started in the 1980s, prompted by a decline in agriculture, initiated an exodus of the rural population from the countryside into the city of Yakutsk. This paper explores the migration dynamics of the rural population to the city. T…
