Merovingian Beads on the Lower Rhine
This paper presents a classification for beads of the Merovingian period (ca. A.D. 450-750) in the Lower Rhine region of Germany. Strings of beads recovered from graves are ordered by a seriation (correspondence analysis) which results in an ethnic (Roman vs. Frankish) and chronological structuring of the material. By comparing this with the chronological scheme established for the other archaeological finds, it becomes evident that the favored t…

Stature estimation in Ancient Greece
Stature is critical for our understanding of human morphology and evolution. This necessitates the development of accurate stature estimation methods. The aim of the present study is to generate population-specific equations for ancient Greece and to explore the diachronic stature trends over the last 10,000 years. In parallel, it introduces the Logarithmic Human Stature Index (LHSI) as a new tool for inter-population comparisons. We collected an…
Application of machine learning on isotopic data from tooth microsections for reconstructing weaning patterns and physiological stress
A diachronic perspective on lithic raw material procurement strategies and mobility
Analysis of prehistoric lithic artefacts helps to answer a wide array of questions concerning archaeological contexts and prehistoric human behaviour. During three projects, we studied the origin of the raw materials of 32 inventories from the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in northwest and southern Germany. The basal petrographic analysis was conducted by the geologist and petro-archaeologist Jehanne Affolter. In addition, data of more than 60 …
A comparison of the anatomical and the mathematical stature estimation methods on an ancient Greek population
%PE to evaluate each equation's effectiveness on both sexes simultaneously. We calculated long bone ratios and the Euclidean distance between the Greek dataset and the reference series. According to the anatomical method, males from Northern Greece had a mean stature value of 168.2 cm ± 5.38 and females of 156.9 cm ± 5.27. The regression equations of Vercellotti et al. (2009) provided the best estimations in both sexes. Estimation errors (%PE) we…
R obert F lierman . Saxon Identities, AD 150–900
Robert Flierman’s Saxon Identities, AD 150–900 is a compact, informative book on the early Saxons or saxones, which is based exclusively on written sources. Archaeological records are not drawn upon. Flierman has resolutely put aside the objective pursued by historicism “to tell it the way it actually happened” (Leopold von Ranke); instead, he uses the historical records to observe how contemporaries reported on the Saxons and the intentions purs…
Thomas Belling, Antike Grabstörungen auf dem frühmittelalterlichen Gräberfeld Köln-Müngersdorf / Ancient Grave Manipulation at the Early Medieval Burial Site Köln-Müngersdorf
Ancient grave manipulations have been recorded continuously on early medieval burial sites. The Franconian necropolis Köln-Müngersdorf is no exception to the phenomenon. Already in 1955 Fritz Fremersdorf mentioned the manipulations in his publication, yet without widespread interpretation. This resulted in the opportunity to round the researches in Köln-Müngersdorf for another interesting aspect. The grave manipulations have been analyzed in deta…
Harris lines revisited
Objectives: The occurrence of transverse radiopaque lines in long bones—Harris lines (HLs)—is correlated with episodes of temporary arrest of longitudinal growth and has been used as an indicator of health and nutritional status of modern and historical populations. However, the interpretation of HLs as a stress indicator remains debatable. The aim of this article is to evaluate the perspectives and the limitations of HLs analyses and to examine …

Alemannen und Franken
Can the Alemannic and the Frank be distinguished purely on the basis of their archaeological remains? This central problem in archaeology is discussed using a concrete case study, and a solution is proposed. The concrete results, an archaeological concept of ethnos and a map showing the distribution of these early medieval peoples, is of interest not only for achaeologists, but also and particularly for historians and philo-logists.
