Open Access•Alana Osbourne, R Jaffe et al.•ARTICLE•European Review of Latin American…•2025

This Exploration highlights recent and emergent themes in the study of Caribbean ecologies across the social sciences and humanities. It draws particular attention to the field of black ecologies, which extends a longstanding engagement with the socio-ecological legacies of colonialism and plantation slavery, foregrounding the racialized nature of environmental harm while also underlining the various forms of worldmaking and free-dom afforded by …

  • The Earth Is Sweet. On Cottica Ndyuka (De)compositions

Open Access•Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2024

How can we remain attentive to the scale of the environmental damage caused in traditional Maroon territories by the effects of the Plantationocene and the material vestiges of colonial and racial violence left by capitalism? Dwelling on conversations held with Maroon Cottica Ndyuka women living in Moengo, a small town established on the Cottica River in Eastern Suriname to support a bauxite industrial plant in the early twentieth century, this t…

Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•ARTICLE•Small Axe A Caribbean Journal of…•2023

This essay seeks to speculate on the reception of de Anton de Kom's Wij slaven van Suriname (1934) within a very different context of political debates on race; decolonization; the politics of solidarity; and internationalist and anticapitalist struggles-all themes that De Kom's narrative tackles in unique ways-and on the question of time. The author attempts to displace De Kom's book away from its entanglement of political and intellectual conne…

Open Access•Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2021

Inspired by the idea of “transculturation,” formulated as a contrastive metaphor and concept by Fernando Ortiz in the 1940s, this article seeks to explore the making of clay balls called “Moengo pemba,” extracted from former bauxite excavation areas by Maroon Ndyuka men. With the establishment of the US bauxite industry in Moengo (Suriname) in the late 1910s, subsequent mining and lumbering activities had profound effects on the lives of Maroon f…

  • Are the things really burnt

Open Access•Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•ARTICLE•Hau Journal of Ethnographic Theory•2021

By looking at the vestiges of the scientific archive destroyed by the fire that reduced Brazil’s National Museum to ruins in September 2018, this essay seeks to explore what Isabelle Stengers (2000) described as “another look” at artifacts and the histories of science and their archives. Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•BOOK•The Things of Others•2020

However, the book's goal is not to dig up evidence of the creation of an epistemology of knowledge and its transnational connections. The research on which this book is based suggests that the ar…

In describing specialized readings about the discovery of a "Ndyuka script" in the last century, the article seeks to analyze procedures that provide context and assumptions of continuity that limits our understanding of the use of Afaka signs in the works of Maroon artists, in particular, of Marcel Pinas as well as young people in Moengo (Suriname). Olivia Maria Gomes Da Cunha•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2015•References: 31

This paper explores some of the consequences of using archival materials produced by an anthropologist's informants. What happens when a resident from a rural area of Cuba is hired to write about the "world", a term used by Carl L. Withers, in which he, his relatives and his neighbours live? By reading letters and other papers sent during the late 1940s, and kept by Withers for more than thirty years, my hypothesis is that his informants took ser…
