The Swedish Theory of Love
In 2020 Sweden's response to COVID-19 drew renewed attention to the Nordic nation in a way that put the finger on a seeming paradox. Long celebrated for its commitment to social solidarity, Sweden suddenly emerged as the last country in the West to resist lockdown while defending individual rights and responsibilities. To explain these contradictions, Henrik Berggren and Lars Trägårdh argue that the long-standing view of Sweden's welfare state as…

The Iron Law of Rights
The empirical aim of the chapter concerns the relationship between individual and state in Sweden as it is expressed in social policy, i.e. the domain where social citizenship and social rights find concrete expression. Focus is on few policy areas that illuminate fundamental questions of power in the relations between state and individual: children’s rights, the rights of the disabled, compulsive care of substance abusers and HIV positive indivi…
Three Forms of Interpersonal Trust
Social trust is usually treated as a dichotomy between particularized and generalized trust. In this article it is argued that a third distinct form, community trust, is neither particularized nor generalized and bounded in space rather than persons. Factor analysis of survey data from 33 Swedish municipalities (N = 6,453) distinguishes between particularized, generalized and community trust. Furthermore, regression analyses show that the three t…

Rethinking the Nordic welfare state through a neo-Hegelian theory of state and civil society
The premise of this paper is that 'civil society' is a concept that is powerful precisely because it is always normatively and ideologically loaded and never politically innocent. The paper begins by laying bare the extent to which the central notions that inform the promotion of the 'non-profit sector' as well as the critique of the (welfare) state are ideologically embedded in an Anglo-American theoretical narrative, one which links civil socie…
Det civila samhällets karriär som vetenskapligt och politiskt begrepp i Sverige
This study analyses how NRK's (the Norwegian Public Service Broadcaster) debate programme, «Redaksjon EN», was produced during the election campaign period in 2003.In order to reveal the premises for the programme, the production processes behind it were followed closely. The analysis presented here concentrates, in particular, on the interaction between TV journalists and politicians during this period. After the election period was over, in order…
State and Civil Society in Northern Europe
Peasantry to Capitalism
Nationalism, individualism, and capitalism
Reversing the arguments of Anderson, Gellner, and Hobs‐bawm, Liah Greenfeld contends that it is nationalism that produces economic development. Specifically, she claims that nationalism inspired three seminal economic thinkers: Marx, List, and Smith. However, Greenfeld's ideological preferences lead her to a problematic conception of individualism as nationalism, as well as to flawed treatments of Smith, List, and Marx. Nationalism is better unde…
Swedish model or swedish culture
The historical roots of the Swedish welfare state are surveyed in an attempt to show how culture accounts for certain peculiarities of the “Swedish Model,”; as compared to other welfare states like Germany or the U.S. It is argued that most of the socio‐cultural patterns that have become firmly associated with the past fifty years of Social Democratic hegemony in fact are of ancient origins and are perhaps most aptly described as simply “Swedish.…
