On a Hillside North of the Harbour: Changes to the Centre of St. John’s, 1942–1987
For both visitors and St. John's residents under 40, the location from Carter's Hill to Springdale Street (from east to west), and from John, Central, and Livingstone Streets to New Gower Street (from north to south) is merely the site of City Hall, Mile one Stadium, the Fortis Building, and the Delta Hotel. 2 The area is less than one kilometre in length and less than 200 metres from north to south. After the 1989 sea trout collapse in the west of Ireland, the angling community (which includes private fishery owners) attributed the collapse to coastal salmon farms, but the salmon farming community linked the sea trout collapse to environmental factors. The contending parties raised issues which are assessed here through the literature on environmental protests and the sociology of science. This paper then provides an analysis of the sea trou…
Balancing social equity and environmental integrity in Ireland's salmon farming industry
Drawing upon insights from research on agriculture and fisheries, interview data, and information from industry and government sources, this article provides evidence to account for the resilience of small producers in the Irish salmon farming industry. Although group marketing, unpaid family labor, and a local infrastructure have supported small firms, such production may be undermined by conflicts with the more powerful tourism industry. These …

Les études portant Bur les fonctionnaires chargés de l'application des règlements indiquent que ces derniers préfèrent l'adhésion volontaire à la dissuasion.
