Notes toward a History of Tragedy and the “Tragic
This essay addresses the rather complex questions of the history and function of the word tragedy: Is there a historically and logically consistent use of the word that can serve as a constant in discussions of both drama and dramatic theory? I will try to address some of the reasons why questioning the historical uses and transformations of the word tragedy and the notion of the “tragic” may be important today. Such an effort matters not just fo…

In his review of the recent New York revival of Sweeney Todd, Frank Rich lavishly praises the production for its willingness to explore psychic caverns where civilized people are not willing to go, while further insisting that the original staging had been far less rewarding because it merely emphasized the dehumanizing horror of the industrial age.1 He then goes on to explain that the original Harold Prince production had shown the oppressive Br…

Drama and Dramatic Theory
In the light of contemporary structuralist and semiotic endeavor, these words may not seem very revolutionary. Some of you no doubt even caught the reference to Hegel's, or should I say Minerva's, owl in this formula. If so, Peter Szondi might, at first, appear to be little more than a recent avatar of the old Hegelian aesthetics. His work has, in fact, brought new life to this tradition, but it also marks a difference which defines Szondi's hist…

A Response to Mark Poster on Jean Baudrillard
I would like, first of all, to thank Mark Poster for offering this brief introduction to Jean Baudrillard's critical theory. And since he himself has begun a critique of Baudrillard's work, I would like to continue in that vein, but with a little less sympathy for what appear to be fundamental weaknesses in Baudrillard's analysis. Baudrillard's basic assertion seems to be that Marx and Marxist
Reason's Rhetoric
Modern Shakespearean critics have often been caught in a struggle on two fronts. In their efforts to come to grips directly with a text, they have had to fight a rear guard action against the critical tradition within which they operate, a tradition which has tended to supplant the original work with its own presence. In other words, modernist criticism has provided texts which, functionally speaking, draw attention to themselves and away from th…

Theater History and Practice
My intention here is not to carry out an exhaustive study of the drama of a particular place or historical moment. Rather, by referring to certain concrete aspects of theater practice, I hope to trace the general lines of a methodology which should not only provide new insights into the nature and function of theater, but also reintegrate theater and dramatic literature into the social context from which they have been so unnecessarily removed. I…
