Representing mental images and immaterial processes in VR. A new materialist reading of Manic VR and Ayahuasca – Kosmik Journey
This article develops a new materialist approach to the representation of mystical-type experiences in Virtual Reality (VR). It investigates how sensory modalities and virtual environments are employed to translate the indeterminate and invisible qualities of mental states and evoke experiences of liminal consciousness that are characteristic of mystical-type experiences associated with psychedelic use or psychosis. Drawing on research in atmosph…
An Agenda for Digital Communication Design Beyond Human-Centric Replication
In this section, we feature reports from conferences, symposia, workshops, and similar events, focusing on discussions where the boundaries of HCI and UX are being challenged and where debate is lively and ongoing
New phenomenologies of pain and the re-conceptualization of health in the digital arts
This article explores the involvement of interoception in the multisensorial experience "Seeing is believing" by Australian artist Eugenie Lee. At the center of this piece is the experience of pain in the absence of tissue damage. Through cognitive manipulation, immersive experience, and elucidation, the piece involves the physical, mental, and social levels of experience and dissolves a strict separation between them. The new phenomenologies of …
Sensing a Heartbeat
Fitness trackers are increasingly used by their wearers to monitor and optimise their exercise, health, and well-being. What is usually not considered is the role our interoceptive sense, the sense for inner-bodily processes, plays in the interpretation of body data and the formation of habits. By including neuroscientific research, perspectives from pragmatist philosophy, and science and technology studies into the analysis of self-tracking devi…
Experimental Environments and the Aesthetic Experience of Metabolic Processes
This article explores the aesthetic experience of metabolic processes in two projects: the newly designed Jade Eco Park in Taiwan, by architect Philippe Rahm, and the virtual reality environment Give and Take, developed by Desiree Foerster, Michaela Büsse, Sarah Hermanutz, and Andreas Rau. The authors argue that a heightened sensitivity to atmospheric and metabolic processes enabled by these projects brings to the foreground a different mode of a…
Awareness for Atmospheres
In this essay I reflect on the meaning of atmospheres while the human world has been overwhelmed by a respiratory disease. In an auto-ethnographic gesture I reflect different ways of sensing and becoming sensitive to the atmospheric changes in my home during self-isolation. This self-questioning is directly related to the conceptualisation of air in view of its potential risk of carrying infectious virus particles. The air we breathe is currently…
Re-reading Whitehead Through the Pre-reflective Experience of Atmospheric Processes
This article explores new perspectives on Alfred N. Whitehead's process philosophy through a micro-phenomenological investigation of the experience of atmospheres. Whitehead's philosophy and micro-phenomenology are both interested in something before it becomes a perceivable quality, yet from a different angle. Atmospheres, always at the brink of our awareness, are taken as a field of possible experiences that opens up when the perception of obje…
