  • Spoils of Neutrality

    Magnus Ressel•ARTICLE•The Journal of Modern History•2024•References: 8

This article examines the involvement of the Austrian Netherlands in the transatlantic slave trade of the early 1780s. It focuses on one actor in particular: Frederic Romberg (1729–1819), a Westphalian living in Brussels, who was primarily responsible for the Belgian slave trade. By allowing elites from Flanders to invest in individual slave voyages and thereby gaining political goodwill in Brussels, his Ghent-based firm Romberg & Consors was abl…

  • The Hinterland of the Holy Roman Empire and the Slave Trade in the Late Eighteenth Century

    Magnus Ressel•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Slavery•2023•References: 12

Residing in Brussels from 1755, Friedrich Romberg, a native of Hemer near Iserlohn in Westphalia and a friend of Emperor Joseph II , may be an exceptional figure in the line of German slave traders with his intensive involvement in the French colonial empire of the 1770s/80s. However, he can also be seen as an emblematic exponent of a profitable niche in the overall panorama of the Atlantic slave trade—namely, the connection of the German and eve…

    Open Access•Magnus Ressel•ARTICLE•Millars Espai i Història•2021

In this article, changing patterns of residency and business strategy of members of the German merchant community in eighteenth-century Venice are analyzed. In this century, many Germans decided to settle permanently in Venice and at the same time to loosen the hitherto tight bonds of their German merchant nation. Due to these changes, the German merchants were able to enlarge their range of business partnerships all over Europe and the Levant. B…

  • British Dominance of Merchant Shipping between Northern and Southern Europe, 1720–1750

    Open Access•Magnus Ressel•ARTICLE•International Journal of Maritime…•2013

Between 1720 and 1750 the British merchant marine dominated the most profitable intra-European sea-lanes, especially between northern and southern Europe. Most important in this regard was the ousting of its Dutch competitors on these routes shortly after the Peace of Utrecht. This secular phenomenon has not attracted much attention and has led to even less explanation by maritime and economic historians. This essay traces the chronology, causes …

  • Venice and the redemption of Northern European slaves (seventeenth and eighteenth centuries)

  • Conflicts between Early Modern European States about Rescuing Their Own Subjects from Barbary Captivity

    Magnus Ressel•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of History•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article is concerned with special cases of the ransoming of Northern European sailors from the so-called Barbary corsairs in the 18th century. Until 1730 these sailors usually were only ransomed when their nationality overlapped with the respective flag of the ship on which they had served. Since the ships' crews in early modern Europe were a largely international workforce, this left a huge group of sailors unprotected from the risk of slav…
