  • Chemical Ecology of the Medicinal Use of Vernonia amygdalina by Chimpanzees

Open Access•Hajime Ohigashi, Michael A Huffman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1996

Vernonia amygdalina (Compositae) has been suggested to be a medicinal plant used by wild chimpanzee in the Mahale Moutains National Park, Tanzania. From this plant, the bitter and related constituents were isolated. There were four known sesquiterpene lactones, and seven new steroid glucosides and two aglycones of these glucosides. The sesquiterpene lactones showed high cytotoxic activity against P-388 and L-1210 cells, and antibacterial activiti…

  • Physiological activities and the active constituents of potentially medicinal plants used by wild chimpanzees of the Mahale mountains, Tanzania

    Open Access•Koichi Koshimizu, Hajime Ohigashi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1993•Cited by: 4•References: 14

  • Possible Medicinal Plants Used by Wild Chimpanzees, and Their Physiologically Active Compounds

Open Access•Hajime Ohigashi, Mitsuo Jisaka et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1991

As a new approach to discovering physiologically active natural compounds, possible medicinal plants used by wild chimpanzees have been studied. Physiological and biological activity tests of three such plants, Vernonia amygdalina, Aspilia mossambicensis, and Ficus exasperata, indicated that they contain a variety of active compounds. Particularly, the activities of V. amygdalina were remarkable, and hence further chemical studies were conducted.…

  • The Search for Useful Plants in the Tropical Rain Forest of Cameroon and the Biological Activities of These Plants

Open Access•Hajime Ohigashi, Mikio Kaji et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Studies•1987

In order to develop new naturally occurring bioactive chemicals, field research on useful plants in the tropical rain forest in Cameroon was carried out in 1983 and 1985. A total of 110 species of plants was selected during the research and the biological activities of these plants, such as insecticidal, fungicidal, and herbicidal activities were examined from an agrochemical viewpoint. Furthermore, anticancer activity in a medical sense was also…
