  • The process of neolithization and consequent changes in the region of Istanbul

    Open Access•Mehmet Özdoğan•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2024

During the last few decades, our knowledge of processes leading to the establishment of food-producing communities in regions peripheral or exterior to that of the core areas of primary neolithization has increased considerably, making it possible to better understand the interaction of migrant farmers with local indigenous communities and how they adapted to environmental conditions that were much different from the places they came from. The pa…

  • The Making of The Early Bronze Age in Anatolia

    Open Access•Mehmet Özdoğan•ARTICLE•Old World Journal of Ancient…•2023

In Anatolian archaeology, as it is the case in the neighbouring regions of the Near East and Aegean, the Bronze Age is considered in three consecutive stages, however, defined not in accordance with metallurgical achievements, but on changing modalities in social and economic structures. Before the beginning of the Early Bronze Age there were fully established farming communities across almost all of Anatolia, though subsisting mainly on family-l…

  • Emergence and Dispersal of Neolithic Lifeways

    Mehmet Özdoğan•CHAPTER•The Epipalaeolithic and Neolithic…•2023

During the past decades, there have been several new field projects taking place in the southeastern and western parts of Anatolia, regions where until then our knowledge of the Neolithic Period was extremely limited. The almost sudden inflow of new information derived from these previously poorly investigated regions has been drawing a picture different from all conventional views, even necessitating to reconsider what is implied by the term Neo…

The second half of the seventh millennium BC saw the demise of the previously affluent and dynamic Neolithic way of life. The period is marked by significant social and economic transformations of local communities, as manifested in a new spatial organization, patterns of architecture, burial practices, and in chipped stone and pottery manufacture. This volume has three foci. The first concerns the character of these changes in different parts of…

Questioning when, how and even why the Neolithic way of life appeared in Europe has been one of the most debated problems of European prehistory, leading to the formulation of various explanatory models, each providing evidence to support its point of view, but without convincing others. Conventional standpoints, one-tract thinking and considering the emergence of the Neolithic way of life as a short-term event have hampered consensus, bringing d…

  • Holocene coastal change in the ancient harbor of Yenikapı–İstanbul and its impact on cultural history

    Open Access•Oya Algan, M Namık Yalçın et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

An extensive rescue excavation has been conducted in the ancient harbor of İstanbul (Yenikapı) by the Sea of Marmara, revealing a depositional sequence displaying clear evidence of transgression and coastal progradation during the Holocene. The basal layer of this sequence lies at 6 m below the present sea level and contains remains of a Neolithic settlement known to have been present in the area, indicating that the sea level at ~ 8–9 cal ka BP …

The beginnings of the Neolithic way of life in Europe and the role played by the Anatolian Peninsula in this process are much-debated issues that involve a number of distinct topics. In this debate, it should not be overlooked that distinct from Europe, at least a portion of the Anatolian plateau had been part of the "Neolithic world" for at least 4,000 years before the appearance of the earliest claimed Neolithic culture in Europe. Accordingly, …

The sedimentary sequence discovered at archaeological excavations in ancient Theodosius Harbour at İstanbul contains the records of sea level, environmental changes and the cultural history of the region. The cobbles at the base of the sequence include archaeological remnants of Neolithic culture that settled in the area between 8.4 and 7.3 14 C ka BP, and are located at 6 m below the present sea level. Due to its geographical position, the Anatolian plateau has always been considered as a bridge in transmitting cultural formations that originated in the Near East to southeastern Europe and to the Aegean. Such a standpoint downgrades the role played by the Anatolian plateau to a transit route between the East and the West, overlooking its distinct structure. It seems that the main bias is in considering the Anatolian plateau as a single cultural…

A survey of open-air sites in NW Turkey identified 16 Palaeolithic sites. Analysis of nearly 2000 lithics identified Lower, Middle, and Early Upper Palaeolithic (EUP) components. The Lower Palaeolithic is represented by a core-chopper/flake assemblage at one site and an assemblage with small bifaces at another. Middle Palaeolithic assemblages similar to the typical Balkan Mousterian were found at most sites, and an EUP assemblage similar to the B…

Nevertheless, recent work in the region has provided the initial facts on the prehistoric sequence of the region. I…
