Affective and material politics of plastic bags
This article explores everyday plastic relations with a focus on plastic bags as sticky objects that are saturated with conflicting emotions, from gratitude and relief to despair. With a material semiotic and affective theoretical lens, and conducting a reflexive thematic analysis of open-ended survey answers (N = 91) from Finnish respondents, the study reveals how plastic bags’ material properties shape the meanings of bags, the related emotiona…
Digital nomadism
Despite significant place-based transformations driven by digital nomadism, the perspective of place remains underexplored and is thus a notable and pressing research gap. The contributions in this collection address diverse issues concerning the impact of digital nomads in places at multiple scales and registers. They examine local-level community-building practices and embeddedness into local communities, analyse meso-level marketing campaigns …
Twice upon a home
Residential energy consumption plays an essential role in mitigating climate change. An energy transition has the potential to alleviate socioeconomic disparities, although it can also lead to an unfair distribution of costs and benefits. The residential energy transition is already progressing in many countries, yet there remains a research gap regarding the participation of diverse population groups and the contribution of second homes to overa…
Mökkitutkimuksesta monipaikkaisuuteen ja etätyömatkailuun
Vapaa-ajan asuminen on merkittävä osa suomalaisten vapaa-ajan viettoa ja matkailua. Suomessa on yli puoli miljoonaa vapaa-ajan asuntoa ja on arvioitu, että jopa 2,4 miljoonaa suomalaista viettää aikaa vapaa-ajan asunnoilla vuosittain. Teemme tässä artikkelissa katsauksen vapaa-ajan asumisen tutkimukseen Suomessa. Tämä katsaus perustuu kirjallisuuslähteiden ohella omakohtaiseen kokemukseemme vapaa-ajan asumisen tutkimuksen alalta, jota on kertynyt…
Emergent rural-urban relations in Covid-19 disturbances
The recent Covid-19 pandemic highlighted rural-urban interactions, in particular the fact that cities are dependent on the accessibility of non-metropolitan and rural spaces and vice versa. This article seeks to understand how these interactions contributed to emergent relational spaces of rurality during the Covid-19 crisis. The article analyses politicised mobilities between localities and rural-urban linkages that are tied to the sustainabilit…

Miten kaupungistuminen ja väestön ikääntyminen vaikuttavat vapaa-ajan asumisen suosioon
Mökkeily on keskeinen osa suomalaista elämäntapaa. Suomen yli puoleen miljoonaan kesämökkiin on infrastruktuureineen sitoutunut huomattava määrä kansallisvarallisuutta ja suomalaisten henkilökohtaista omaisuutta. Mökkeilyn tulevaisuudesta on kuitenkin esitetty huolta. Miten yhteiskunnan suuret trendit, kuten väestön ikääntyminen ja kaupungistuminen, vaikuttavat vapaa-ajan asumiseen? Väheneekö vai lisääntyykö vapaa-ajan asunnoilla vietetty aika? T…
Second homes during corona - safe or unsafe haven and for whom? Reflections from researchers around the world
The COVID-19 pandemic has rapidly slowed down, reduced, and changed the flows of tourism mobilities. While many national borders have been closed and/or regulated, the main emphasis has been on domestic travelling and tourism
Perceived Wellbeing Effects of Ecosystems in Finland
Human recognition, valuation, and communication lie at the heart of ecosystem goods and services. We explore how the wellbeing effects of ecosystems are recognized and communicated based on data obtained from an information campaign to increase public awareness of the health and wellbeing benefits of rural nature areas in Finland. Interested members of the public from different backgrounds were asked to outline and publicly share short descriptio…

Seasonal residence and counterurbanization
Since the late twentieth century, many developed countries have experienced population deconcentration, labelled as counterurbanization. There has been an academic discussion on the meaning, validity and universality of this concept, drivers of counterurbanization and its impacts on rural areas. To date, research on counterurbanization mostly apply static and discrete definitions of residence, migration and population, which is an increasingly si…
Substitute or addition to hypermobile lifestyles? Second home mobility and Finnish CO2emissions
Tourism produces an increasing share in global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These are mostly derived from transport emissions, and long-haul air travel in particular. Short-haul domestic tourism is believed by some to be a potential substitute for long-haul tourism. Using the example of Finland this paper examines the extent to which domestic second home tourism can substitute for other leisure trips and therefore contribute to reductions of t…
Borders and Second Home Tourism
Trans-border tourism and second home ownership are growing phenomena around the world. Existing literature discusses the border as an attraction, barrier or opportunity for different types of interactions that cross it including tourism, while the relationship between borders and second home tourism has not received much academic attention. This study explores the role of borders in trans-border second home tourism. We ask: what are the motives f…
Leisure Activities and Rural Community Change
Rural communities are getting more diversified in terms of people's backgrounds, sources of livelihood and interests towards the rural landscape. A common way to discuss rural community change has been to contrast in-migrants and seasonal residents with long-term rural residents. In this article, we aim to challenge this segmentation. We ask what it is to be a dweller in the modern countryside and how much the residential status has to do with pe…
Second home countryside. Representations of the rural in Finnish popular discourses
Second-home Landscape
Second homes are an integral part of leisure history in many developed countries. They are also increasingly popular in modern societies. While the material well-being of home and work has increased, many people increasingly seek simpler life forms. An essential motive to use and purchase a second home is the landscape. This article explores the concept of second-home landscape on the basis of contemporary research and a case study of second-home…
The Transformation of a Neutral Lake Landscape into a Meaningful Experience – Interpreting Tourist Photos
The purpose of this article is to present the mental images of the Finnish lakeland held by potential Italian and German tourists. Image analysis was used in order to find the attributes tourists connect to pictures of lake landscape and to their own mental images of the places shown. The attributes found were classified under categories through which the touristic potential of the lake could be approached. The mental images evoked by the picture…
