  • Capital deprivation, assets, and the Universal Child Allowance for Social Protection in a Paraná slum, Argentina

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2023•References: 40

In this article, I describe a case in which a mother and her son, while discussing what they perceive to be the purpose of the Argentinian conditional cash transfer programme known as the 'Universal Child Allowance for Social Protection', also project different economic returns for the son's future. The decisions they make contradict the ultimate purpose of this policy: to accumulate human capital in the recipient through formal education. The yo…

  • Catholic-Maya Sacrificial Commitments

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•Critical Research on Religion•2022•References: 34

In their annual festival in an eastern village of the Yucatan state, participants verbalized, discussed, and disputed two main understandings of Catholic commitment after a Catholic priest asked his parishioners to reconsider the effects of their ritual offerings. His teachings about compromiso signaled other ritualized practices, which compose the concept: promises and sacrifices. In direct contrast to the priest's teachings, local ritualists un…

  • Dinero-capital de la Asignación Universal por Hijo para la Protección Social en un barrio marginal de la ciudad de Paraná, Argentina

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•Revista Colombiana de Antropología•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 22

  • Monetizing State Services to the Poor: Intentional Analysis of Three Latin-American Conditional Cash Transfer Programs

Open Access•Andrés Dapuez, Sabrina Gavigan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2016•References: 15

Conditional Cash Transfers (CCTs) have been described as fundamental to the “post-neo-liberal” turn in Latin America. Through an analysis of the stated and unstated goals of three CCT development programs in Latin America, Mexico’s Progresa-Oportunidades, begun in 1997; Brazil’s Programa Bolsa Familia (PBF), started in 2003; and Argentina’s Asignacion Universal por Hijo (AUH), started in 2009, this paper suggests that CCTs portend the continuatio…

  • Development and the Temporality of Its Exchange. How an Eastern Yucatec Village Made Cash Transfer Promises Accountable

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•Antípoda Revista de Antropología…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 15

This paper explores how three temporalities of exchange amend the reception of cash transfers for development in a village in Eastern Yucatan, Mexico.Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews of recipients of cash transfers from Procampo and Oportunidades, this study reveals that ritual promising functions as a means of temporal regulation in most transactions of this sort, and that the recipients hold their government accountable …

  • Supporting a Counterfactual Futurity: Cash Transfers and the Interface between Multilateral Banks, the Mexican State, and its People

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•The Journal of Latin American and…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 21

  • Promising and Engaging the Future Through Ritual Sponsorships in Eastern Yucatan, Mexico

Open Access•Andrés Dapuez, Andrés Dzib May et al.•CHAPTER•The Economics Of Religion…•2011

In a village of Eastern Yucatan, Mexico, cargo or kuuch sponsors compare their ritual tasks to “buying life” from crosses, Catholic saints, and Mayan deities or “owners.” The local notion of compromiso, engagement, or commitment, helps these festival participants express the condition of possibility to successfully perform such exchanges. Decisive for these life renewals, promises, and compromisos depend upon empathy to authorize ritualists and s…

  • Nesting Expectations: What Can the Mexican and Argentinean Cash Transfers Tell Us about the Development of Development

    Open Access•Andrés Dapuez•ARTICLE•Anthropologica•1969•Cited by: 1

Latin American cash transfer programs have been implemented aiming at particular anticipatory scenarios. Given that the fulfillment of cash transfer objectives can be calculated neither empirically nor rationally a priori, I analyse these programs in this article using the concept of an "imaginary future." I posit that cash transfer implementers in Latin America have entertained three main fictional expectations: social pacification in the short …
