  • (Fe)male Voices on Stage

  • State of the Field

    Open Access•Jeroen Puttevils, Max‐Quentin Bischoff et al.•ARTICLE•History•2024•References: 5

In the last decade, future thinking has rapidly gained importance as a topic of historical study. This article provides an overview of the existing historiographies of future thinking as well as the actions and practices that follow such thoughts. We trace the pedigree of histories of the future back to the German historian of ideas Reinhart Koselleck and show how his conceptual framework has been adopted and adapted by later scholars. Open Access•Jeroen Puttevils•ARTICLE•TSEG/ Low Countries Journal of…•2018

This contribution offers a series of thoughts on new directions which social and economic history in the Low Countries might take. The field faces important challenges: source digitization, automatic handwriting recognition and digital methods of analysis. Somewhat ironically, social and economic history has received renewed interest after the 2008 financial and economic crisis. This crisis has fuelled research into inequality and capitalism and …

  • Marketing and Pricing Risk in Marine Insurance in Sixteenth-Century Antwerp

    Open Access•Jeroen Puttevils, Marc Deloof•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic History•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 29

Drawing on a set of insurance contracts brokered in Antwerp in 1562-1563, we demonstrate that by that time Antwerp hosted a sophisticated, large, and international market for marine insurance in which small and large traders could acquire and sell insurance, backed by the intermediation of a large broker, Juan Henriquez who functioned as an open-access institution. Using information from Henriquez's ledgers which was also available to underwriter…

  • Eating the bread out of their mouth

    Open Access•Jeroen Puttevils•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2015•References: 24

This article studies the distribution of exports from mid-sixteenth-centuryAntwerp at the individual and group level (grouped by merchant origin). Recently, scholars have argued that sixteenth-centuryAntwerp, and in its wake a series of other cities, hosted an open-access market as a result of an evolution towards open-access institutions. However, the direct effect of this institutional change on merchant enterprise is hard to measure. Relying o…
