Coexistence, contacts and conflicts in the precordillera of Tacna during the Late Intermediate Period (AD 1100-1450)
The precordillera of Tacna, between the communities of Sitajara and Tarata, has long had the reputation of being a zone of cohabitation between local, altiplano and coastal populations. However, this scheme, mostly based upon ethnohistorical data, appears to be at odds with several lines of archaeological evidence and with the wider emphases on conflict during the Late Intermediate Period (LIP). In this article, based on the study of the pre-Inca…
A new view of hillforts in the Andes
In the Andean highlands, hilltop fortifications known as pukaras are common. Dating predominantly to the Late Intermediate Period (AD 1000–1450), pukaras are important to archaeological characterisations of a political landscape shaped by conflict but the distribution of these key sites is not well understood. Here, the authors employ systematic satellite imagery survey to provide a contiguous picture of pukara distribution on an inter-regional s…
Pucara Hilltop Settlements in the Lupaca and Pacajes Territories, Southern Andean Altiplano, during the Late Intermediate Period (AD 1000-1450)
The quantity of archaeological data for the fortified hilltop settlements of the Late Intermediate period on the Andean altiplano, called pucaras, varies greatly. Some areas, such as the territory of the Colla Aymara chieftaincy east of Lake Titicaca, are well documented thanks to recent and exhaustive research. Other areas, such as the territories of the Lupacas and the Pacajes, are much less documented. From comparative spatial analyses of sate…
