  • Televsion Viewing and Early Initiation of Sexual Intercourse

    James L Peterson•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1991•Cited by: 18

Using data from the National Survey of Children, this paper examines the hypothesis that the amount of time children spend viewing television and the extent to which the content viewed is sexual in nature is related to the initiation of sexual activity. Several theories that would lead to this hypothesis are reviewed. The data do not provide any strong or consistent evidence for such links. However, some aspects of the concept in which television…

  • Race Differences in the Timing of Adolescent Intercourse

    F F Furstenberg, Philip Morgan et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1987•Cited by: 97•References: 8

Researchers have long been aware of sizeable racial differences in the prevalence and timing of premarital sexual behavior. In a national US sample of youth aged 15-16 blacks are shown about 4 times more likely than whites to report ever having intercourse. Various explanations are hypothesized: a demographic composotion explanation that stresses differential socioeconomic position; an explanation that focuses on the consequences of low socioecon…

  • Heated Argument and Adolescent Development

Open Access•Candida C Peterson, Candida Peterson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This study explored some correlates of parent-child conflict in healthy, nonclinical families. The subjects were 100 Australian adolescents, fifty male and fifty female, who were divided into concrete-operational and formal/transitional groups on the basis of their performance on two Piagetian problem-solving tasks. Their habitual modes of dealing with disagreements with their parents were scored on a continuum from conflict evasion through calm …

  • Parental Attitudes and the Occurrence of Early Sexual Activity

Kristin Anderson Moore, James L Peterson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1986•Cited by: 27

The hypothesis that parental communication and monitoring of adolescent children will discourage premarital sexual activity is examined among white 15 and 16-year-olds interviewed in the 1981 US National Survey of Children the 2nd wave of a nationally representative longitudinal study designed to assess the physical social and psychological well-being of different groups of US children. Whites were studied separately since preliminary analysis in…

  • Marital Disruption, Parent-Child Relationships, and Behavior Problems in Children

James L Peterson, Nicholas Zill•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1986•Cited by: 174

This study examines the effects of marital disruption on children's behavior, accounting for variations in postdisruption living arrangements and the effects of parent-child relationships and marital conflict. The study is based on a 1981 national sample of 1,400 children aged 12-16. Disruption was associated with a higher incidence of several behavior problems, negative effects being greatest with multiple marital transitions. The negative effec…

  • Sex education and sexual experience among adolescents

F F Furstenberg, Kristin Anderson Moore et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•1985•Cited by: 16•References: 7

This paper examines the association between sex education and adolescent sexual behavior. Data from the 1981 National Survey of Children show that 15- and 16-year-olds who have been exposed to sex education are less likely to be sexually experienced, and are neither more nor less likely to discuss sex with parents at home. Retrospective or longitudinal data are needed to more directly test the casual link between sex education and experience

  • The Life Course of Children of Divorce

    F F Furstenberg, Christine Winquist Nord et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1983•Cited by: 149

In a preliminary analysis of data from a nationally representative sample of U.S. children aged 11 to 16 in 1981, the authors examine (1) the incidence of marital disruption in children's lives; (2) the type of living arrangements children experience following a disruption; and (3) the amount of contact children maintain with the outside parent. The analysis reveals large racial differences in both the incidence and aftermath of disruption. Black…

  • Linguistic Determinants of the Difficulty of True-False Test Items

    Open Access•Candida C Peterson, James L Peterson•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1976

Adults read a prose passage and responded to questions based on it which were either true or false and were phrased either affirmatively or negatively. True negatives yielded most errors, followed in order by false negatives, true affirmatives, and false affirmatives. The discrepancy from the ordering Wason (1961) found for binary propositions and the implications for construction of true-false examinations are discussed
