What is in a bag? Doing and becoming subjectivity
This article explores the ways in which material objects relate to selfhood, by focusing on school bags – a personal item that is close to bodies, expressive but also used. We review scholar work on self with a specific focus that conceptualises self in relation to material objects. This review portrays the self as a unique, dynamic, experiencing subjectivity in terms of either self-awareness or as an agent of social order. Building on this frame…
Physical Products and Their Digital Representations: Social Media Interaction via School Bags
This study explores the role of digital representations of products with respect to reproduction mechanisms of designed objects, including doings with objects – practices – and the user subjects. To understand these relationships, practice theory that explains objects, subjects and practices as co-constituted is instrumental. The study builds on the concept of digital habitus, an appropriation of Bourdieu’s habitus that includes digital technolog…
Material Processuality: Alternative Grounds for Design Research
This article opens discussion on the positivist epistemology underlying the understandings of materials in design research that have been brought along as a result of theory and methods inherited from engineering and psychology. Examining the ambitions of work that seeks to operationalize knowledge created by these methods in the design process, we propose that attending to the processuality of material forms is a more adequate way for design res…
Materials as temporally specific phenomena: Specialization and compromise in bioplastics production
This article concerns itself with the 'materials' - matter, substance - of material culture. More specifically, it explores the making of bioplastics, by taking account of bioplastics' relationships with the products into which they are made. The author focuses on the processes of bioplastics' industrial production and manufacturing into bioplastic products, in and through which bioplastics come to be as they are in our daily lives, and as places…
