Determining Contextual Factors for a Heart Failure Self-Care Intervention
There is a rising recognition of the crucial role self-care plays in managing heart failure (HF). Yet patients often have difficulties implementing ongoing self-care recommendations into their daily lives. There is also recognition of the importance of theory for successful intervention design, and understanding of key factors for implementation so interventions fit a given context. Local key stakeholders can provide valuable insights to help und…
The Voting Scheme Determines the Winner. Considering Possible Options for Designing a Delphi Study
The Delphi technique is an important tool for structuring a group communication process among key stakeholders to inform the development of an intervention. However, when designing a Delphi study the scarcity of information on different voting schemes to analyse key stakeholders' responses became evident, despite the fact that selecting the voting scheme a priori is paramount, since the selected method can influence the outcome. To fill that gap …
Improving the visibility and description of theory in qualitative research
The relationship between theory and qualitative research has been much debated. In 2014, based on an analysis of qualitative studies, we published a five-point typology on the levels of visibility expounded in such studies. The typology captured a range of theoretical visibility - from seemingly absent to consistently applied. In 2020, we undertook a project to critique and revise the typology, guided by the ADAPT-ITT framework. ADAPT-ITT was dev…
Scoping reviews
Literature reviews generally analyse and synthesis the evidence (or lack thereof) in a particular topic area and they are an increasingly popular form of scholarly activity. The scoping review is a popular literature review approach that has been adopted across the social and health sciences over the last fifteen years. With this upsurge in use, differences of opinion about how to analyse and report scoping reviews has also grown. Drawing on work…
Lessons learned from applying Sandelowski and Barroso's approach for synthesising qualitative research
Despite the proliferation of differing methods for synthesising qualitative research, Sandelowski and Barroso's approach stands out because it is a stimulus to thinking and creativity. Yet, when applying the approach within our qualitative meta-summary and meta-synthesis project, we encountered some methodological challenges. Key aspects of the approach are outlined and juxtaposed with how we handled them in practical terms thereby entering into …
Advancing the science of literature reviewing in social research
Literature reviews are an important and popular part of synthesising evidence across a range of disciplines. There are numerous approaches, each with their distinctive features and purposes. The aim of this article is to advance the science of literature reviewing by describing a new form of review: The ‘Focused Mapping Review and Synthesis’ (FMRS). We critique the approach and highlight its similarities and differences in relation to existing re…
From Qualitative Meta-Summary to Qualitative Meta-Synthesis
Situation-specific theories provide nurses with a vehicle to interpret situations, guide their decisions or make assumptions about factors influencing a health problem. In this article, we used meta-synthesis techniques to integrate statements of findings pertaining to barriers and facilitators to heart failure self-care that were derived previously through meta-summary techniques leading to a new situation-specific theory. According to our propo…
The state of qualitative research in health and social science literature
Pluralism and creativity are inherent and important parts of the qualitative endeavour. The multiplicity of approaches and methods can, however, be confusing. We undertook a focused mapping review and synthesis to obtain a snap-shot profile of the state of qualitative research in health and social science literature. We retrieved 102 qualitative articles published between January and March 2015 from six leading health and social science journals.…

How theory is used and articulated in qualitative research
Vignette development and administration
This paper is a discussion regarding vignette development and administration as a means of protecting research participants in social research. Health and social care researchers investigate a plethora of issues that may be sensitive or upsetting, for example, abuse or bereavement. This exposes participants to potential emotional harm caused by revisiting the original trauma. Using research methods that offer a protective layer is important. Evid…
