  • Armenia and the eastern marches

    Open Access•C S Lightfoot•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Ancient History…•2005

In antiquity most of eastern Anatolia was contained within the kingdom of Armenia. As a consequence of the Armenian wars fought in the reign of the emperor Nero, a new dynasty was established on the Armenian throne, that of the Arsacids, a branch of the Parthian royal house. Religion plays a significant role in the struggle over Armenia. The indigenous polytheism had long been mixed with Iranian elements and pagan religion was essentially syncret…

    Open Access•C S Lightfoot, E A Ivison et al et al.•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1995•References: 1

The seventh season of excavations took place between July 7 and August 20, although actual digging only lasted for four weeks because of the Project's limited resources this year. The Project is extremely grateful to the Kaymakan of Emirdağ, the Mayor and Municipality of Emirdağ, the local Jandarma Komutanlığı, and to th…

  • Trajan's Parthian War and the Fourth-Century Perspective

    Open Access•C S Lightfoot•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1990•Cited by: 1•References: 6

No contemporary account of Trajan's Parthian War survives, nor were any monuments set up to commemorate his exploits in the East in the same way that Trajan's Column in Rome and the trophy at Tropaeum Traiani (Adamclisi) do his Dacian Wars. We rely almost entirely on the excerpts of Dio Cassius' History preserved by Xiphilinus, together with a few fragments of Arrian's Parthica , in order to reconstruct the causes, objectives and strategy of the …

  • Two Roman samovars (authepsae) from Caesarea in Cappadocia

Open Access•M Yazici, Muhammed Yazıcı et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1989•References: 3

How old is the samovar, that ceremonial apparatus traditionally associated with the serving of tea in (old) Russia and the Near East? This new find from Anatolian Turkey provides further evidence for the use of this kind of vessel for making hot drinks back in Roman times

  • A Roman Glass Flask in Gaziantep Museum

    Open Access•C S Lightfoot•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•1985•References: 1

Early Roman mould-blown glass vessels are widespread and well-known in the museums, private collections and sale rooms of Europe and America. However, one encounters such items less frequently in the regions where a great many of them were made. Although much work has been done on the origins and early practitioners of the craft of mould-blowing, few actual vessels have been recorded in the eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. So it is pleasing…
