  • A World Divided? Studies of Gender Relations in Modern Greece

    Open Access•Gillian Bottomley•ARTICLE•Mankind•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 18

This paper explores anthropological and sociological representations of gender relations in modern Greece, in the light of recent re-examination of the perspective and inherent biasses of such representations. I argue that the dichotomous schema used in many studies obscure the complexities of gender relations Moreover, further analysis of the centrality of the family in economic and political activities suggests both ethnocentrism and androcentr…

  • Polyphony, Polythetic Practice and Intercultural Communication in Greek-Australian Creative Work

    Gillian Bottomley•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2002

In polyethnic countries like Australia, multicultural policies are usually based on concepts of discrete ethnic identities. Such models are increasingly inadequate in either describing or understanding the multiplex and polythetic practices that constitute Australian society and culture. This paper will discuss aspects of Greek-Australian music and dance that negotiate polyphony in what Freud described as the agonistic process of identification. …

    Gillian Bottomley•ARTICLE•Communal/Plural Journal of…•2000

Themes of identity, difference, ethnicity and culture are central to practices of exclusion and inclusion. Yet a concentration on political rhetoric around these important themes often accompanies a neglect of the ongoing experience of negotiating difference. This paper explores both levels of analysis in comparison of French and Australian material, in an attempt to interrelate national/local, public/private and political/cultural discourses and…

  • Anthropologists and the Rhizomatic Study of Migration

    Open Access•Gillian Bottomley•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•1998

Beginning with a commitment to the idea of connections rather than ruptures, I have traced some of the associations between anthropology and movements of populations, taking a long view in order to place theoretical developments in context while noting continuities and changes. For example, theory and methods constructed in early 20th century US or colonial Africa have been transformed in specific ways that deserve attention. With this comparativ…

  • From Another Place: Migration and the Politics of Culture

    Open Access•Gillian Bottomley•BOOK•From Another Place•1992

Never before have so many people ended up in a place different from where they began, something which made the twentieth century a century of migration. Culture is central to the process of migration, yet it is rarely examined in studies of the political economy of labour migration. Originally published in 1992, From Another Place explores definitions and understandings of the relations between migration and cultural processes, calling into quest…
