Response to Roundtable: The Many Possible Histories of Iowa
The Pilgrim’s Identity in Liquid Modernity
The road, journey, wandering are topics known from works of various historical epochs that still appear in social sciences, philosophy and literature. According to Zygmunt Bauman, as humans, we have gone from the times of solid modernity, when we perceived ourselves as “pilgrims” characterized by the concept of identity, to the times of liquid modernity, when we are “tourists” looking for diverse but ephemeral experiences. In this article, I show…
An Engaging and Popular Primary Source
I teach an Iowa history class at Iowa State University. In recent years, this course has been online, but I taught it for several years face-to-face. One of the major readings for the class is the memoir of Mildred Armstrong Kalish, Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits on an Iowa Farm during the Great Depression. This is a charming and highly readable primary source that has been popular with my students since I started teaching the class…
Die Kilianslegende des Veit Stoß in der Kirche der hl. Maria Magdalena in Münnerstadt
The Issues of Bio- and Psychopolitics in Pandemic Times as Reminiscences of the Romantic Glorification of Life
The present coronavirus pandemic has confronted each of us individually and our society at large with new existential and theoretical-practical challenges. In the following article I present a look at the pandemic from the point of view of biopolitics (Michael Foucault, Giorgio Agamben) and psychopolitics (Byung-Chul Han). The reflections on biopolitics and psychopolitics, on top of the terms they used, make us aware of the fragility of human lif…

Wittgenstein's Tractatus as Poetic Philosophy and Philosophical Poetics
This article argues that it is helpful to discuss the logico-philosophical contents of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus in terms that confront the poetic and literary qualities of its form and style. To begin with, it analyzes Wittgenstein's short remarks about expression as manifested in the "tone" of Georg Trakl's poetry and the "ineffability" of Ludwig Uhland's poem "Count Eberhard's Hawthorn." Then it proceeds to consider his exc…

An artistic rather than a scientific achievement: Frege and the Poeticality of Wittgenstein's Tractatus
In this article I explore some implications of the correspondence that went on between Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889-1951) and the logician and mathematician Gottlob Frege (1848-1925). Part of this exchange was focused on the envisaged publication of Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus , and on the philosophical or literary character of that work. The problem discussed concerned the question of whether the Tractatus should be seen not as a …
Soul or Mind? Some Remarks on Explanation in Cognitive Science
In the article author analyses the extent to which it is possible to regard the Aristotelian conception of the soul as actually necessary and applicable for modern neuroscience. The framework in which this objective is going to be accomplished is provided by the idea of the coexistence of the “manifest” and “scientific” images of the world and persons, as introduced by Wilfrid Sellars. In subsequent sections, author initially formulates an answer…
