The Apian Universe in Eastern Christian Hymnography
Despite the considerable scholarly attention devoted to Byzantine hymnography in recent decades, its content remains insufficiently explored. While most research has focused primarily on its historical development and liturgical function, the present study examines one of the many recurring themes found in the lyric compositions preserved in the principal Byzantine hymnographic anthologies—the Octoechos, the Triodion–Pentecostarion, and the Menai…
The Symbolic Value of a “Romanian” Saint
The present study seeks to trace the relationships among six versions of the Passio Ioannis—the account of Saint John of Trebizond, whose relics were transferred to Suceava—and to highlight the differences that emerge across the roughly four centuries separating them. Each version reflects the Orthodox Church’s attempt to communicate a particular message and to project signals intended to resonate as deeply as possible within the consciousness of…
"Γάλα ἀντὶ αἵματος"-An Unwonted Hagiographic Topos
Some Christian texts, and especially hagiographic and hymnographic ones, record a miraculous phenomenon at the violent deaths of several martyrs: from the beheaded bodies, milk flows instead of blood. After a superficial reading of the biographical passages in the synaxaria and iambic stichoi recorded in the Menaia, we can identify at least ten such cases, among which we find well-known saints, such as Apostle Paul and St. Katherine. This article…
Some considerations on monasticism according to Father André Scrima
Father André Scrima emphasised in his works the importance of monasticism as an inward phenomenon of the church, and he even believed that the Orthodox Church can be considered a ‘monastic’ church, given that monasticism is itself ecclesial. Trying to explain this ecclesial function, Father Scrima developed a unique, fresh vision regarding the role that the monk had throughout history, and this article sought to summarise some of these observatio…
Sfântul Ioan Gură de Aur şi migraţia goţilor
This article aims to present a significant episode in the history of migrations in Europe: the passage of the Visigoths into the Roman Empire south of the Danube (376 A.D.) and their transformation from afflicted refugees into fearsome insurgents. Beyond this spectacular evolution, the author evaluates the position of the Church and the attitude of Bishop John Chrysostom towards these migrants in a context in which xenophobic feelings have reache…
Father André Scrima on Interdenominational Dialogue and Interreligious Openness
Living and teaching among different cultures, Father André Scrima found a favourable environment that challenged him to understand the complex dynamic of the relationship with the 'alien', the 'other'. He developed a fresh theological position and proposed a responsible openness to otherness. Through his entire diplomatic and didactic activity, and especially through the ideas he promoted in his courses, he tried to set in motion an approach to i…
