Forum on Rahul Rao’s Out of Time, Part II: Rethinking Homonationalisms
In this Forum, six scholars reflect on Rahul Rao’s recent book Out of Time: The Queer Politics of Postcoloniality from other geographies, themes and radical possibilities. Playing the Hero Card: Masculinism, State Power and Security Feminism in Homeland and Zero Dark Thirty
Quite frankly, I didn’t even want to use you guys, with your dip and velcro and all your gear bullshit. I wanted to drop a bomb. But people didn’t believe in this lead enough to drop a bomb. So the
Radicalizing female empowerment: Gender, agency, and affective appeals in Islamic State propaganda
Women, from across the West, have increasingly joined Islamic extremist groups in a variety of roles. Why are women participating in movements which have a misogynistic and violent outlook? These include lack of marriage prospects, past experiences of sexual violence, and familial loss at the hands of ‘the enemy.’ This model of analysis…

Saving the Enemy: Female Suicide Bombers and the Making of American Empire
The growing number of female suicide bombers in the Muslim world has recently received a lot of attention by academics and journalists in the West. This developing literature has tended to understand these women as victims or pawns of Islamic patriarchy. This article offers critical review of the causal accounts of female suicide bombing in order to show how these discourses of victimization reify a masculinist justification for American empire. …
In the Face of the Machine: Westoxification, Cultural Globalization, and the Making of an Alternative Global Modernity
Some western scholars have interpreted criticisms of the West by Islamist and Middle Eastern intellectuals as expressions of anti-modernism and anti-globalization. Arguing that anti-westernism is often an attempt to fashion an alternative global modernity, this essay explores the ideas of one prominent social and political thinker in pre-revolutionary Islamic Iran, Jalal Al-e Ahmad. The article argues that his concept of westoxification challenge…
