The Oldest Hammer-Axes of the Corded Ware Culture in Bohemia
The aim of this study is to analyse hammer-axes assigned to the so-called A-horizon of the Corded Ware Culture (c. 3000–2350 BC). The focus area is Bohemia. The main emphasis is placed on the raw materials of these artefacts, which were analysed non-destructively using optical stereomicroscopy, X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Although archaeogenetic analyses indicate that the Corded Ware Culture arrived in Bohemia as a…
First conclusions on Early-Middle Holocene ground (sand)stone production in the Eastern Sahel
Raw materials for Neolithic ground tools from the extraction fields at Bílý Kámen Hill, Central Bohemia
The assemblage of ground tools and their fragments from the site of Bílý Kámen Hill near the town of Sázava (Czech Republic, Central Bohemia) is one of the largest chronologically uniform collections in Central Europe. Based on the dominant representation of bored axe-hammers, we date it to the late phase of the Stroked Pottery culture (SBK; 5100/5000–4500/4400 cal BC). Their connection to the extraction of local marble and the production of pres…
Value, significance and use of 'exotic' materials – in the light of the presence of obsidian on Neolithic sites in Poland
At Neolithic archaeological sites in Poland, obsidian stands out as the most common ‘exotic’ raw material. Thereare over several hundred Neolithic sites where artefacts made from this raw material have been recovered. Given the absence of natural obsidian outcrops in Poland, it is evident that these artefacts were imported to the sites through various means, such as direct procurement or exchanges. One of the most extensive collections was found a…
Prehistoric quarrying in the Jizerské hory mountains
In the 20 years since the important discovery of metabasite quarrying in the Jizerské hory Mountains (northern Bohemia, Czech Republic) a wealth of knowledge has been gathered on this raw material used to make Neolithic polished stone tools. A synthesis of these results now gives a more comprehensive view of how this raw material was employed in different periods and extracted directly at the source sites. The overview is at the same time a sprin…
The Shaqadud Archaeological Project (Sudan)
The authors present preliminary results from a new research project based in Jebel Shaqadud, Sudan. Their findings highlight the potential for this region's archaeological record to expand our understanding of the adaptation strategies used by human groups in arid north-east African environments away from rivers and lakes during the Holocene. Furthermore, they present exceptionally early radiocarbon dates that push postglacial human occupation in…

Die Erzeugungskette Von Marmorarmringen Des Jüngeren Neolithikums / Chaîne Opératoire of the Marble Bracelets of Late Neolithic Period
Nový výzkum pravěkých těžebních polí na Bílém kameniu Sázavy, okr. BenešovNew excavation of the prehistoric mining fields at Bílý kámennear Sázava, Central Bohemia
The article presents a current view of the issue of the Neolithic mining site of Bílý kámen near Sázava (Czech Republic, Benešov district). The results are based both on an analysis of earlier finds and on the finds from a new archaeological excavation. The findings show that the traditional idea of one of the most important monuments of prehistoric mining activities of non-silicate rock in Central Europe will need to be substantially revised. Th…
The Status and the Role of ‘Chocolate’ Silicite in the Bohemian Neolithic
The article focuses on the chronological status of the distribution of ‘chocolate’ silicite originating from the area of south-east Poland in the prehistory of the Czech lands. The flow of ‘chocolate’ silicite across the Carpathian Mountains culminated in the period of the Stroke-Ornamented Ware culture (5100/5000–4500/4400 cal BC) in the area studied. Based on the analysis of the contexts of finds and the classification of the artefacts, the raw…
How Was Neolithic Pottery Fired? An Exploration of the Effects of Firing Dynamics on Ceramic Products
Bavorské jurské rohovce Franské Alby v neolitu a eneolitu Čech
BC). V souboru byly sledovány technologické kategorie štípané industrie, morfologicko-funkční skupiny nástrojů a spektrum využívaných surovin v rámci STK.
